What do Muslims expect from the Holy See? ماذا يتوقع المسلمون من الفاتيكان؟

May 16th, 2014

By Khalid Amayreh

In two weeks' time, the Pope of the Vatican, Pope Francis, will arrive in Occupied Palestine in a visit that will last for a few days. He is slated to meet with religious and political leaders representing Muslims, Christians and Jews. He is expected to visit religious shrines belonging to the main monotheistic faiths in the Holy Land.

We Palestinians wish the Pope a successful and rewarding visit. We also hope and pray the visit will help enhance relations between the followers of the Roman Catholic Church and the followers of Islam. Needless to say, the stabilization and possible reconciliation of relations between Muslims and Christians, especially Catholics, is a human and religious obligation incumbent on true believers of all confessions.

Crazy Erdogan? Turkey's PM Loses his Grip

May 16th, 2014

crazypm

The Turkish Medical Association may have been right when it announced it was "terribly worried … about the emotional well-being of [Turkish] Prime Minister Erdogan." (March 16) (Image: WAFF)

The PM reinforced the medical opinion when he broke from reality in his remarks on the major mine disaster at Soma Mining, Manisa, Turkey. Erdogan casually dismissed the tragedy of the 282 dead miners.

"I went back in British history. Some 204 people died there after a mine collapsed in 1838. In 1866, 361 miners died in Britain. In an explosion in 1894, 290 people died there. Take America with all of its technology and everything ... In 1907, 361 [miners died there]. These are usual things.” PM Erdogan, Manisa, May 14, 2014

Erdogan made this statement while over a 100 miners remained trapped in the collapsed mine.

California Courts: Unconstitutional Trials, Satanic Rituals

May 15th, 2014

By Ruth Hull

Forget all you have been told about American courts. Justice and law have nothing to do with the courts of 2014. Today, judges act as employees of the rich and powerful, oppressing and imprisoning the weak and innocent. Justice is history.

When I went to law school, I was under the illusion that the purpose of the courts was to interpret the Constitution and laws and attempt to ensure that some form of justice or fairness took place in the cases before it. I was naive and believed in the illusion of justice. I thought that, if you had the law on your side, you would do well. When the Supreme Court stopped the counting of votes in Florida in 2000, they did so in contravention of the U.S. Constitution and the laws of the land. They stopped the vote-counting because they didn't want Al Gore to be President and not because there was any basis in law. Do you really think the decision in Citizens United had any rational relationship to the Constitution? Do you really think the lower court judges are any more likely to follow the laws of the land than the NDAA President, the PATRIOT Act Congress or the corporate personhood Supreme Court?

In 2014, the majority of judges and attorneys are openly breaking the oaths they took when first becoming judges and attorneys. They have dropped any pretended interest in fairness, justice, the truth or the law. Most honest attorneys have fled the profession, finding more honorable work elsewhere. Most attorneys who continue to practice are bottom-feeders, taking bribes from opposing parties, scamming their clients and breaking the law when paid to do so. The exceptions are rare. If you go to the bar conventions, you learn that those running the state bar are well aware that law and justice have no relationship to the practice of "law. Instead, the practice of "law" is about about money and power. If you have money and power, you own the courts. If you don't, you better hope that you get one of the three or four honest judges who hasn't been given the boot.

New York Times War on Truth

May 15th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

The so-called "newspaper of record" is an establishment broadsheet. It represents wealth, power and privilege.

It's America's lead instrument of state propaganda. It marches in lockstep with official US policy.

It's a virtual Washington house organ. A lying machine. A de facto ministry of state misinformation.

Vital truths are buried. Managed news rubbish substitutes. Core journalistic ethics are violated. Readers are systematically lied to.

They deserve better. They're cheated on what matters most. They're betrayed.

It bears repeating what previous articles stressed. All the news fit to print isn't fit to read.

Famed Chicago columnist Mike Royko (1932- 1997) once said "no self-respecting fish would (want to) be wrapped in a Murdoch paper..." Or the NYT he might have added.

Lavrov on Washington's Dirty War

May 15th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

A previous article called Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov a world class diplomatic. He shames his Western counterparts.

He's a true peace advocate. He works tirelessly for it. He faces long odds. He's matched against Washington's villainy.

It prioritizes war on humanity. It rages out-of-control. It's for unchallenged world dominance.

It's about eliminating all independent governments. It's for destroying their sovereignty.

It's about replacing them with pro-Western stooges. Eliminating major rivals matter most.

Lavrov said seeds for ongoing Ukrainian crisis conditions were sown in April 2008. It's when US-led NATO urged Ukraine and Georgia maintain closer alliance relations.

Plans to do so were discussed. It happened "during the (April 2008) NATO summit in Bucharest," said Lavrov.

It's "when NATO leaders stated in a declaration that Georgia and Ukraine would be in NATO."

TIME Magazine Describes Chaos In FCC Wheeler's Office Due To Growing Protests

“Occupy the FCC” encampment gathers support from tech companies and advocacy groups as net neutrality protesters surround FCC headquarters with tents and banners

Unsatisfied with backpedaling and empty promises from FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, activists are camped out day and night on the agency’s doorstep demanding the Internet be reclassified as a common carrier

WASHINGTON, DC -- This morning, and every morning since last Wednesday, FCC employees were greeted on their way in to work by a dedicated group of net neutrality activists who are camped out on the agency’s doorstep with tents, signs, and a giant banner reading, “Don’t Break the Internet!” Many FCC employees have expressed their support to the demonstrators, who have distributed hundreds of flyers to people entering FCC headquarters.

Eastern Ukrainian Referendum Post-Mortems

May 14th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

On Sunday, Donetsk and Lugansk residents voted. Democracy triumphed overwhelmingly.

Both regions declared independence. Self-determination is inviolable. It's a universal right.

Not according to Washington. Reaction was as expected. It didn't surprise.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki lied calling both referendums "illegal." They reflect real democracy in action.

"We do not recognize the illegal referendum that took place in portions of Donetsk and Luhansk over the weekend," she said.

"It was illegal under Ukrainian law and an attempt to create further division and disorder in the country."

Democracy Landslide in Eastern Ukraine

May 14th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

On Sunday, Donetsk and Lugansk regional referendums were held. Democracy triumphed overwhelmingly.

Almost 90% of Donetsk residents voted for self-determination. For local autonomy. For self-rule. Accounting to Central Election Commission head Roman Lyagin:

"Counting the ballots proved to be surprisingly easy. The number of people who said 'no' was relatively small, and there appeared to be only a tiny proportion of spoiled ballots, so we managed to carry out counting quite fast."

"The figures are as follows: 89.07 percent voted 'for' (self rule),10.19 percent voted 'against' and 0.74 percent of ballots were rendered ineligible."

"The region is witnessing the escalation of violence," he added. "(L)ots or armed people have come to the region. Sometimes it is impossible to say whom these people represent."

Ballot deliveries were impeded. They were "beset by the danger to the life and health of members of election commission" members.

Final Lugansk results showed 96.2% for self-rule. Election Committee deputy chairman Alexander Malykhyn announced it.

George Soros' Predatory Worldview

May 14th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

He's a world class confidence man. He's a multi-billionaire predatory investor.

He's a new world order corporate pirate. He's known for rogue investing. He's made billions from human misery.

He cashes in irresponsibly. He'll do anything for greater profits. He does so from imperial wars. He gains hugely from financial ones. He uses wealth to accumulate more of it.

In late April, the New York Review of Books headlined "The Future of Europe: An Interview with George Soros." Der Spiegel correspondent Gregor Peter Schmitz conducted it.

Ukraine was discussed. Soros called Russia an "emerging…big geopolitical player…" EU nations have "a resurgent rival on (their) east," he said.

Putin enjoys overwhelming popularity. It exceeds 80%. Soros ludicrously claimed he "lead(s) from a position of weakness."
