Arab World’s Withering Heights

May 23rd, 2014

Dr. Mahboob A. Khawaja

“Certain forms of modern life lead directly to degeneration….in the poor as well the rich, leisure engenders degeneration. Cinemas, concerts, radios, automobiles and athletics are no substitute for intelligent work. We are far from having solved this momentous problem of idleness created by prosperity, modern machinery or unemployment. By imposing leisure upon man, scientific civilization has brought him great misfortune. We are incapable of fighting the consequences of indolence and irresponsibility as cancer and mental diseases……after all the purpose of civilization is not the progress of science and machines, but the progress of man.” - (Alexis Carrel. Man the Unknown, 1936)

Israeli State Terror

May 23rd, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Every day is Kristallnacht in Palestine. Israeli security forces attack, brutalize, murder or injure nonviolent Palestinians with impunity.

They're ruthless. They're lawless. It's standard practice. Crimes too grave to ignore occur multiple times daily.

Soldiers, border guards and police harass, intimidate and terrorize Palestinians ruthlessly.

They hold an entire population hostage.

Fear is constant. It's pervasive. Collective punishment is official Israeli policy. Peaceful public demonstrations are prohibited. So are free expression and movement. Population centers are isolated. Borders are closed. Occupation harshness denies Palestinians control over their own land.

Normal daily life is nonexistent. Economic strangulation is imposed. Institutionalized racism reflects official Israeli policy.

The ‘revolutionary’ face of the Syrian conflict

May 22nd, 2014

By Nicola Nasser*

Reports are abound by international organizations about the responsibility of the Syrian government for the human rights violations in the ongoing conflict in Syria, now in its fourth year, but the responsibility of the insurgents has been kept away from media spotlight for political reasons.

However, the horrible image of the “revolutionary” performance imposed itself on the media and public opinion to an extent that it has become impossible to black it out anymore.

Internationally last Thursday, for example, the U.S. envoy to the United Nations, Samantha Power, said that Russia’s and China’s vetoes against a United Nations Security Council resolution to refer allegations of war crimes in Syria to the International Criminal Court (ICC) “protect monstrous terrorist organizations operating in Syria … who are pursuing a fundamentalist assault on the Syrian people that knows no decency or humanity.”

Kiev Wages War on Free Expression

May 22nd, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

It wants truth suppressed. It wants its own message alone reported. It wants fundamental freedoms eliminated altogether.

Neo-Nazi fascist regimes operate this way. Ukraine is by far the region's worst. It menaces its own people.

It launched premeditated aggression. It continues against Eastern Ukrainian freedom fighters. Against noncombatant civilians.

Against opposition elements nationwide. Against independent journalists. Against Russian ones.

Some were denied entry. Others were deported. Various ones were attacked.

LifeNews journalists Oleg Sidyankin and Marat Saichenk were harassed. They were arrested. They're detained.

Irresponsible China Bashing

May 21st, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

China bashing reflects official US policy. Washington does it numerous ways.

It's reprehensible. It's confrontational. It's potentially belligerent. Rogue states operate this way.

No nation spies on more nations than America. None more intrusively. None more aggressively. None more lawlessly.

None for more reasons. None in more ways. None more duplicitous about it. None more involved in cybercrime. More on this below.

China is a major US economic, political and military rival. Washington wants it marginalized, weakened and isolated.

It wants its sovereign independence eliminated. It want pro-Western puppet governance replacing it.

It wants its resources plundered. It wants its people exploited. Bashing China risks open conflict. So does pursuing America's overall imperial objectives.

Irresponsible Scoundrel Media China Bashing

May 21st, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Media scoundrels march in lockstep with Washington's worst policies. They do it egregiously. They do it irresponsibly. They do it ad nauseam.

They're virtual government house organs. They twist vital truths to fit US policy.

They're bashing China. They're piling on. It followed reprehensible Justice Department charges. A separate article discussed them.

Washington never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity to engage other nations responsibly.

Polar opposite polices substitute. They're standard practice. Washington rules alone apply. Other nations are pressured, bullied and threatened to comply.

NYT Editors Defend the Indefensible

May 21st, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Jill Abramson is gone. Dean Baquet replaced her as executive editor. Deplorable policy remains unchanged.

It's featured daily. It's done so in articles, commentaries and editorials. Disgraceful op-eds are standard practice.

Scoundrels are invited. Truth-tellers aren't welcome. Misinformation rubbish is featured. What readers most need to know is buried.

Lies, damn lies and Big Ones infest Times pages. Yulia Tymoshenko is a former illegitimate Orange Revolution prime minister.

She's billionaire mega-thief. She accumulated wealth the old-fashioned way. She stole it.

She was imprisoned for embezzlement and serious "abuse of public office."

Charges included illegally diverting $425 million meant for environmental projects into pension funds. A second case involved stealing around $130 million for personal use.

Putschists freed her. They did so lawlessly. She has presidential aspirations. She enjoys weak support.

Earlier she had dozens of secret offshore bank accounts in over two dozen countries. Reportedly most are closed.

Sino/Russian Unity: What Washington Most Fears

May 21st, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

China is an economic powerhouse. It's the world's second largest economy. It's heading for number one status.

Perhaps sooner than most expect. It's growth way outdistances America. It's multiples greater.

Russia matches Washington's military might. It does so in nuclear weapons strength. With sophisticated delivery systems.

Able to strike global targets accurately. With hugely destructive force. Enough to decimate potential adversaries. Perhaps to discourage potential aggression.

Russia is rich in what China needs most. Oil and gas mainly. Technological expertise. Industrial equipment. Sophisticated weapons.

Kerry at Yale

May 21st, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

On May 18, he returned to his alma mater. He's class of 1966. He was a mediocre student. He barely managed to graduate.

He got four freshman year Ds. His cumulative four-year 76 numerical rating barely avoided failure. Gentlemen C's got him through.

He was Yale's featured Class Day speaker. He addressed graduating students. His mother stressed integrity.

"Integrity, John," she said. His father said "diplomacy was really being able to see the world through the eyes of someone else, to understand their aspirations and assumptions."

Two important lessons Kerry never learned. He's vying for Washington's worst ever Secretary of State dishonor.

He fronts for imperial lawlessness. He's an unindicted war criminal. He represents America's dark side.

Palestinian reconciliation reeling under Israeli pressure

May 20th, 2014

Khalid Amayreh

The reconciliation agreement signed in Gaza last month between the mainstream PLO faction, Fatah, and the Islamic Liberation group, Hamas, is reeling under intense pressure from Israel and her guardian-ally, the United States.

Israel repeatedly threatened to adopt "draconian measures" against the Palestinian Authority (PA) in case the latter dared implement the agreement with Hamas on the ground.

The punitive measures, dubbed blackmailing tactics by PA officials, include halting the transfer of tax revenues to the Palestinians as well as a series of other restrictions and harassments.

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was quoted as saying on Friday that the PA would have to choose between Hamas and the peace process.
