Cheerleading for War

March 24th, 2011

by Stephen Lendman

When America goes to war, managed news goes with it spreading rumors, half-truths, misinformation, and willful deception about targeted nations, regimes and leaders, whether despots or democrats. Whoever first said it, the first casualty of war is truth, and then some as John Pilger once observed saying:

"Journalism is the first casualty. Not only that: it has become a weapon of war, a virulent censorship (and willful misreporting) that goes unrecognised in the United States, Britain and other democracies; censorship by omission, whose power is such that, in war, it can mean the difference between life and death for people in faraway countries...."

As a result, managed news jeopardizes free and open societies by substituting fiction for facts, carefully filtered reports for truth, and cheerleading propaganda for real journalism. As a result, wars of aggression are called liberating ones. Civil liberties are suppressed for our own good, and patriotism means going along with lawless governments, reigning death and destruction on defenseless nations for imperial, not noble, reasons.

Billionaires Flourish, Inequalities Deepen as Economies “Recover”

March 24th, 2011

James Petras

Introduction

The bailouts of banks, speculators and manufacturers served their real purposes: the multi-millionaires became billionaires and the later became multi-billionaires. According to the annual report of the business magazine Forbes there are 1,210 individuals – and in many cases family clans – with a net value of $1 billion dollars (or more). There total net worth is $4 trillion, 500 billion dollars, greater than the combined worth of 4 billion people in the world. The current concentration of wealth exceeds any previous period in history; from King Midas, the Maharajahs, and the Robber Barons to the recent Silicon Valley – Wall Street moguls of the present decade.

I SAW THE MOON

March 24th, 2011

By Gaither Stewart

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, a Bushite figure, with his former model wife and renowned salopette, Carla Bruni. Always glad to play useful foil to America's designs, but harboring ambitions of his own.

(Rome) Last Saturday night I saw the Supermoon. The same March 19 night that Operation “Odyssey Dawn” was launched against the Libya of Muammar Gadaffi, the earth’s star in all its glory passed its nearest point to planet Earth as it does every 19 years. This time it was a full moon. It hovered over my house. At midnight the yellow Supermoon illuminated my front yard almost as a winter sun does at midday. That same night the same moon shone also over Tripoli, 600 miles the south, illuminating all of Libya as it did my front yard.

Nuclear vs Oil: The devil we know

March 24th, 2011

Eric Walberg

As oil prices soar and countries think twice about expanding nuclear power, we should be careful about where to point the finger.

Japan’s trauma following the partial meltdown of nuclear reactors in Fukushima has once again brought to the world’s attention the dangers of nuclear power. From the start, it was clear that a broad advocacy of nuclear energy is bad ecology. Splitting the atom (or worse, fusing atoms) unleashes intense heat and radiation and produces poisonous waste that lasts for up to 10,000 years or more.

Revolt Against American Militarism

March 24th, 2011

By Timothy V. Gatto

When will the American people demand accountability from their government? When will Americans realize that there is no “clear and present danger” that could conceivably be used to invoke the war powers act? Where is it written that America is the conscience of the planet and has the right to bomb and kill those that the United States regards as evil?

This is no joke. The bombing and the cruise missile attacks are killing people that are non-combatants. Women, children the elderly as well as those that are non-political are dying, killed by American weapons systems. The leadership in America is committing war crimes. The hypocrisy of the United States is glaringly evident when Obama called for charges to be brought against Gadhafi by the International Criminal Court, an organization that America no longer recognizes due to the possibility of charges being brought against members of the Bush administration and now the possibility that Obama and his administration may be culpable for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Meanwhile the American public does nothing, while the media ignores the behavior of the government and it’s military.

China attacks Wordpress.com: 'Largest and most sustained attack' in WP history

March 23rd, 2011

By Rady Ananda

For two days this month, Wordpress.com, which hosts a tenth of the world's websites drawing nearly 300 million unique visitors a month, suffered the largest distributed denial-of-service attack in its six-year history. Six separate attacks on March 3 and 4, mostly originating from China, targeted a single Chinese-language site hosted by WP.

On March 3rd, WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg told TechCrunch (also hosted by WP), “There’s an ongoing DDoS attack that was large enough to impact all three of our datacenters in Chicago, San Antonio, and Dallas."

ATTACK ON LIBYA / ANOTHER OBAMA BROKEN PROMISE

March 23rd, 2011

Allen L Roland

On December 7th, 2007 Barack Obama said "The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation” ~ another broken promise thrown into the trash can of history as President Obama orchestrates regime change in Libya under the guise of humanitarian intervention.

Robert Greenwald, Reader Supported News, nails our current illegal pre-emptive action in Libya perfectly ~ “ President Obama's decision to participate in the strikes in Libya has already cost US taxpayers "well over $100 million," according to the National Journal. The Journal also relayed that, "the initial stages of taking out Libya's air defenses could ultimately cost ... coalition forces between $400 million and $800 million." The administration launched this new war (and yes, it is a war) with no official congressional authorization, little public debate and with a vague, possibly even non-existent, endgame in mind. It's as if the lessons of the last decade are completely lost on policymakers in the United States.” http://readersupportednews.org/opinion2/289-134/5364-day-one-obama-drops-100-million-dollars-on-libya

Western Aggression on Libya

March 23rd, 2011

by Stephen Lendman

Make no mistake. Another Washington-led resource war targets Libya's riches, besides wanting new US base locations for greater regional dominance.

America doesn't covet regional sun, sand and sea. "Humanitarian intervention" is a lie. So are notions about peace, not war, liberation, equity, justice, and other democratic values. Washington tolerates none of them abroad or at home, plundering the world roguishly.

All US presidents are war criminals. Obama is one of the worst, doubling Bush's lawlessness, adding Pakistan and Libya aggression to Iraq and Afghanistan, spending $1.5 trillion annually for militarism plus multi-trillion dollar handouts to Wall Street crooks, while pleading poverty to cut essential homeland social benefits.

Greenland-Antarctica Ice Melt: Earth Climate Entering Uncharted Territory

March 23rd, 2011

By Andrew Glikson

With the exception of massive volcanic events and asteroid impacts, no geological record exists for rises of greenhouse gases (GHG) (CO2, CH4, N2O) at rates as high as the rate of 1 to 2 ppm CO2/year since the second half of the 20th century.

By distinction from Mars (Temperature -113 C to 0 C ; thin atmosphere pressure of 0.01 Bar at surface; CO2 ~95.3%) or Venus (T~450 C ; 90 Bar at surface; atmosphere of CO2 & sulphuric acid), the modulation of Earth surface temperature by greenhouse gases (GHG) prevents its freezing to -18 C, thus allowing the presence of liquid water and thereby of life.

The connections between the level of GHG, troposphere temperatures, formation or melting of ice and therefore variations is sea level (Figure 1) are in the core of climate science, including future climate projections [1, 2].
