Iran Bashing

September 25th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

It's longstanding. It's been ongoing since the 1979 Iranian revolution. February 11, 2014 marks its 35th anniversary.

It ended a generation of repressive Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi rule. He's not missed.

In 1953, Theodore Roosevelt's grandson/CIA operative Kermit Roosevelt engineered the Agency's first coup. Democratically elected Mohammad Mosaddegh was ousted.

At the time, The New York Times called him "the most popular politician in the country." It didn't matter. Washington wanted its man in charge.

Reza Shah Pahlavi was installed. America and Britain regained an Iranian client state. A generation of darkness followed. In 1979 it ended.

Obama's General Assembly Address

September 25th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

His address didn't surprise. It was beginning-to-end demagogic boilerplate. It featured imperial mumbo jumbo. He turned truth on its head like he always does.

A year ago he claimed intervening in Libya was to "cope with violent conflict, care for the wounded, and craft a vision for the future in which the rights of all Libyans would be respected."

"And after the revolution, (he) supported the birth of a new democracy, as Libyans held elections, and built new institutions, and began to move forward after decades of dictatorship."

Fact check

Libya was Africa's most developed country. Most Libyans supported Gaddafi. They did so for good reasons. He provided free healthcare, education and much more.

Merkel's Germany

September 25th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

On September 23, Der Spiegel headlined "Word From Berlin: Triumph Confirms 'Era of Merkelism."

She "won a stunning victory. Conservatives (achieved) the best result in two decades. Merkel is at the zenith of her power."

Financial Times contributor Wolfgang Munchau headlined "Merkel's almost total political triumph," saying:

"Just a few votes shy of an absolute majority was the best conceivable result Angela Merkel could have had." "It was an electoral triumph of the kind that are extremely rare in German politics."

Syria's Troubled Waters

September 25th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Conflict continues. It's raged for two and half years. It shows no signs of ending. Washington's peace overtures ring hollow. Obama prioritizes war.

Russia represents the last line of defense against it. Vladimir Putin responsibly endorses peaceful conflict resolution.

On Monday, he addressed Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) member states. They include Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.

Afghanistan and Serbia are observers. Iran's a possible future member. CSTO is an intergovernmental military alliance. Its charter opposes aggression.

Washington Pressures Russia for War Resolution on Syria

September 25th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

It doesn't surprise. Regime change was planned years ago. Washington tolerates no independent states. It doesn't matter if they're democratic, despotic or anything in between.

America seeks unchallenged world dominance. It's waging war on humanity to achieve it. It bears repeating. Syria's in the eye of the storm.

Washington's determined to oust Assad. It doesn't matter how faithfully he abides by the US/Russia chemical weapons disarmament agreement.

All indications show he's doing so. He's got every incentive to do it. He's got every reason to scrupulously avoid violating it.

It doesn't matter. Washington targets him for removal. Pretexts for war are easy to create. False flags are a US tradition. They've been used many times before.

New York Times Disparages Mother Agnes Mariam

September 24th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

It doesn't surprise. Times editors lie for power. They support Obama's war on Syria. They want Assad toppled.

They endorse any way to do it. More on their attempt to discredit Mother Agnes below.

Doing so reveals their pro-imperial agenda. It shows how low they'll stoop supportively. Longstanding Times policy reflects anything goes.

Times editors weigh in against governments Washington opposes. They publish one-sided reports. They do it repeatedly. They suppress real news and information.

They violate core journalistic ethics. They spurn their own code of conduct. They substitute managed news misinformation for "all the news fit to print."

Protesters Take Over US Trade Rep Building Expose Secret Negotiations

September 24th, 2013

Protesters Demand Transparency for the Trans-Pacific Partnership at Office of the U.S. Trade Representative with Banners, LockdownAbove: Anti-TPP activists pose after their successful protest drapped the US Trade Representative with four massive banners. Photo by Bill Hughes.

Washington, DC – This afternoon, September 23rd, protesters concerned about the looming Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) covered the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative with banners calling for a democratic process and a release of the treaty’s text. The group, which included members of FlushTheTPP.org, Backbone Campaign, Veterans for Peace, CODEPINK, and Earth First!, say that the TPP will have vast consequences for U.S. laws, workers rights, the environment and many other aspects of life.

We decided to expose these secret negotiations by going right to their national office and plastering the Office of the US Trade Representative with messages that let them and the public know what they are doing. We took over their office building today, and plan to continue to escalate tactics in Congress and wherever we see opportunities to expose the TPP, stop the undermining of democracy through Fast Track and have a real debate over whether the US wants rigged trade for big transnational corporations or fair trade that puts people and the planet before profits.

Bye, Bye, American Pie

September 24th, 2013

by Daniel Patrick Welch

US intransigence in the face of a war-weary world will mean the end of the country as we know it

It actually shouldn’t be that much of a shock. For the last twelve years at least, Americans have watched their country drift into the shadows of international law abroad and onto the shoals of fascism at home. Inexorably, the weight of imperial overstretch has crippled an economy already on a constant war footing and led to the steady erosion of civil liberties once taken for granted.

At one point, Democrats cried out in (what turns out to be mock) horror when one of the Bushmen smirked at the Geneva Convention as ‘quaint.’ Outrageous! Squeaked the remnants of an American “Left.” No more. As drones are poised to darken the skies like a plague of locusts, intelligence agencies can read all of our communications even as we write them, and the general criminalization of dissent has accelerated without objection because, after all, the guy doing it has a -D after his name.

Israel Launches Anti-Rohani Media Blitz

September 24th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Hassan Rohani is Iran's new president. On June 14, Iranians elected him democratically. He won a clear first round majority. On August 3, he was inaugurated.

Obama failed to congratulate him. He hasn't recognized his legitimacy officially. He's a longtime distinguished leader. He's held numerous high level positions.

He combines diplomacy, political acumen and scholarship. He's called the "Diplomat Sheikh" for good reason. He urges peace and reconciliation. He promises "government of hope and prudence." He pledged "constructive interaction with the world."

Arab People in War and Peace

September 23rd, 2013

Mahboob A. Khawaja, PhD.

Arab people appear oppressed, demoralized but instinctively furious at the Western world for not coming to rescue them from the daily civilian bloodbaths, use of chemical weapons in Syria, on-going massacres of the innocents in Egypt and Iraq and progressively moving cycle of degeneration across the oil exporting Arab societies. Nobody holds rational proactive viewpoints what the future will be if there is one for the despotic Arab authoritarian rulers phasing out faster than the speed of light, so to speak. A page in the recent history book, there was Saddam Hussein, Moummar Qadafi, Hosni Mubarak, Abdullah Saleh and now Bashar Al- Assad generating lost minute tormenting pains to the masses. Undoubtedly, these are the hallmarks of the contemporary Arab politics, more specifically “do nothing” self-centered naïve political culture of co-existence - people living with extreme adversity without any revulsion against the oppressors.
