Climate myths?

May 1st, 2009

Andrew Glikson

Responses by Andrew Glikson to Andrew Bolt’s article “10 climate myths” (Herald Sun 29-4-09) (http://www.crikey.com
.au/Politics/20090429-Climate-myths-
Glickson-v-Bolt.html
)

Andrew Bolt presented 10 climate change "myths". (http://blogs.news.com.au/ heraldsun/andrewbolt/index.php/ heraldsun/comments/column_the_10_ warming_myths/?source=cmailer).

Here is my response to each. Essentially, the "skeptics" are searching for short annual or biannual changes, rather than looking at decade-scale trends. Failing to understand that science is a self-correcting discipline, they hope that, if and when they find minor errors or uncertainties (such as always exist) the entire scientific edifice behind the idea of climate change will collapse. By the fact that the so-called "climate change skeptics" are attempting to refute every single direct observation and measurement in nature, as well as the basic physics and chemistry of the atmosphere, indeed climate science as a discipline, they reveal a resistance to the scientific method as such.

Clinton’s Unpromising Start

May 1st, 2009

Ramzy Baroud

Incongruous. One can hardly think of a more suited term to describe the new US administration's approach to peacemaking in the Middle East. Though there is little evidence that previous US administrations had genuinely attempted to play a balanced role in forging a just peace between Israel and the Palestinians, many hoped -- and a few still hope -- that Barack Obama's administration would bring about new standards.

However, if recent comments made by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton suffice as a general indication of the administration's Middle East policy, then little change is on the horizon.

FDR'S New Deal v. Obamanomics in Their First 100 Days

April 30th, 2009

Stephen Lendman

"Roosevelt confronted "the money changers," even though mostly through
rhetoric. Obama, like Bush, embraces them openly..."

With good reason, progressive economists reflect positively on Roosevelt's New Deal even though:

-- it failed to end the Great Depression;

-- had many flaws;

-- did too little for blacks, women, immigrants, small farmers, agricultural workers, and the poor;

Road of Absolution

April 30th, 2009

Jan Hipple

A people disavow the problems facing our nation with fingers pointed in every direction, but themselves. Words spoken of hate for things not understood and a nation crumbles for the bitterness growing in the souls of unbelievers. Greed and power feed the egos of the bureaucrats on Capitol Hill. Twisted mouths spew lies wrapped with false sincerity, while our nation watches yesterday’s freedom disappear. Glorified for their words of hope the masses smile for a bright future coming.

Failures of Intelligence has reaped the Militarization of Christianity

April 30th, 2009

eileen fleming

"The Crusade for a Christian Military: Jesus Killed Mohammed" by Jeff Sharlet in HARPER'S May 2009 edition is a chilling clarion call regarding the entrenchment of Christian fundamentalism in the USA military beginning during the Cold War that accelerated during the Vietnam era which has now wrecked havoc on the very soul of our nation.

Fundamentalist [referred to as evangelical by Sharlet] Chaplains began to join the military in droves as they aligned themselves with the Industrial Military Complex in opposition with Catholics and mainline moderate Protestant denominations such as Methodists, Presbyterians, and Episcopalians who were of one voice speaking out against American terrorism in Vietnam and for following in the ways of the nonviolent Jesus.

The Death of Humanitarian Law Was Gaza

April 29th, 2009

Allen L Roland

The wholesale blatant slaughter of innocent civilians, under the guise of war, is the death of humanitarian law. It is still happening in Iraq and it recently happened during Israel's 22 day assault on Gaza from December 2008 through January 2009 ~ which left 1400 Palestinians dead ~ many of them children:

In the First World War 5 per cent of those killed were civilians, in the Second World War 48 per cent, while in a Third World War 90-95 per cent would be civilians. We are already seeing those percentages reached in America's illegal war and occupation of Iraq, where over a million Iraqis have been killed and displaced, and also in Israel's recent illegal assault of Gaza where over 1400 Palestinian civilians have been slaughtered.

Osama Bin Laden Believed Dead By Pak Intel

April 29th, 2009

The Media Line

Arch-terrorist Osama Bin Laden "may have been killed", since there is little information to suggest he is alive, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said on Monday.

Neither Pakistani nor American intelligence experts have detected traces of Bin Laden since the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera aired an audio recording of his voice in March, Zardari said, and even that recording has not been confirmed as Bin Laden’s voice.

Zardari said his advisers believed there was substance to the rumors of his death, but he could not confirm this.

There have been several reports over the last few years suggesting Bin Laden, 52, could be dead, and others regarding his ailing health.

None of the reports have been substantiated.

It is believed the terror chief is hiding in the mountainous region that straddles the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

U.S. State Department Spokesman Robert Wood said the U.S. had "no information" as to whether Bin Laden was dead or alive. “We will continue to hunt Osama Bin Laden until we can capture him or bring justice to him,” Wood said.

Thank You Arlen Specter! Now We're Sure to Get the Following

April 29th, 2009

Michael Collins

We're just about there, the magic 60 figure in the United States Senate. It's being called a filibuster proof majority for the Democratic Party. All we need is a belated recognition of the United States Constitution and the rules of the Senate in the form of an official Senator Al Franken (D-MN) and we're ready to rock.

Here's what we can expect:

Surely habeas corpus will be restored in an unashamed expression of support for that centuries old protection of civil liberties.
