Obama Supports Nuclear Proliferation, Opposes Disarmament

May 25th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

No country threatens humanity's survival more than America. It's ruthlessness and recklessness risk ending life on earth.

Nuclear weapons threaten everyone. They represent potential disaster waiting to happen.

America and Russia hold over 90% of the world's nuclear weapons. Survival depends on eliminating these WMDs once and for all.

Martin Luther King warned against nations "spiral(ing) down a militaristic stairway into the hell of (potential) thermomnuclear destruction."

Anti-nuclear expert Dr. Helen Caldicott says "reliance on fossil fuels and nuclear energy is destroying the earth that we live on. It threatens not only our future, but the future of life as we know it."

"From the youngest child to the eldest elder, we must speak together with one voice." End nuclear proliferation or it'll end us.

Not as long as Washington and Israel block efforts to do it - intending to maintain menacing nuclear arsenals threatening world peace and survival.

From April 27 - May 22, over 150 countries participated in a Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

Its objective is preventing the spread of nuclear weapons, promoting peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and ultimately achieving complete elimination of this menace.

Conferences have been held every five years since NPT became effective in 1970.

The 2015 conference addressed:

  • universality of NPT;

  • nuclear disarmament;

  • nuclear non-proliferation;

  • peaceful use of nuclear energy;

  • regional disarmament and non-proliferation;

  • implementation of the 1995 resolution on making the Middle East "free of nuclear and all other weapons of mass destruction" and their delivery systems;

  • measures to address withdrawal from NPT;

  • ways to promote engagement with civil society in strengthening NPT; and

  • promoting disarmament education.

Weeks of talks ended in failure. Washington, Britain and Canada partnered in obstruction. They blocked agreement aimed at preventing nuclear weapons and technology proliferation.

They rejected a proposal from Arab countries for a Middle East free from these weapons by March 2016.

Israel is a nuclear outlaw. The whole world knows it's nuclear armed and dangerous. It refuses to sign NPT.

It attended the conference as an observer. It opposes nuclear disarmament. Whatever may be agreed on by other nations or mandated by the UN, it intends maintaining its thermonuclear arsenal and long-range delivery systems.

US Undersecretary for State and Arms Control Rose Gottemoeller lied blaming Arab states for "cynically manipulat(ing)" discussion by setting a deadline for Israel and other regional nations to agree within months to meet on making the Middle East nuclear weapons free.

She called stipulations for doing so "incompatible with our longstanding policies."

Addressing the conference's opening in April, John Kerry said "there would be no prospect for engagement or agreement absent the consent of all the states involved" - including America with its nuclear armed Fifth Fleet and land-based occupying forces throughout the region.

Washington and Israel intend keeping the region nuclearized - threatening Middle East peace and security, risking nuclear war.

Iranian IAEA ambassador Reza Najafi urged conference participants to halt cooperation with non-NPT signatories - especially Israel.

It's the region's sole nuclearized state - besides America's naval and land-based arsenal. It maintains a policy of nuclear ambiguity.

It opposes NPT and IAEA inspections. Russian delegation conference head Mikhail Ulyanov expressed "disappoint(ment) that the adoption of a final document including section on the Middle East turned out to be impossible because of the objections of three states."

The goal of NPT and its quinquennial conferences is nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.

America, Israel, Britain, Canada and likeminded states make achieving these goals impossible.
