Extrajudicial Killing: Official US Policy

February 8th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Since taking office, Obama headed America toward full-blown tyranny. He enforces Bush administration police state laws. He added more of his own. He governs like a tinpot despot. He targets free expression, dissent, whistleblowing, and other constitutional freedoms. He usurped diktat authority.

He spurns civil protections, judicial fairness, and other fundamental rights. Abuse of power is institutionalized.

By executive order, he authorized anyone indefinitely detained with or without charge on his say. He promised to close Guantanamo but keeps it open. He operates a secret global torture prison network.

Israeli State Terror Crowd Control Weapons

February 8th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

State terror is official Israeli policy. Community incursions, assaults, and other violent incidents occur daily. Palestinian suffering follows.

They have no rights. Peaceful demonstrators are attacked. In August 1967, Israel issued Military Order No. 101 ("Order Regarding Prohibition of Incitement and Hostile Propaganda Actions," as later amended).

Public or private political gatherings, assemblies, processions, or vigils of more than 10 Palestinians without permission are prohibited.

Any attempt to "influence public opinion….in a manner liable to harm public safety or public order" is considered lawless.

Publications "contain(ing) material with political significance" are banned. They include printed, photographed, recorded, filmed, online, or other materials.

Displaying national symbols is prohibited. Military commanders have full authority. They "may empower any soldier or police officer….to exercise his powers in accordance with this order."

Targeting Younas Abdullah Muhammad

February 8th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

American disparagement of Muslims is longstanding. In his book "Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People," Jack Shaheen said they've been denigrated throughout decades of cinematic history.

From silent films to recent ones, they advance prejudicial attitudes. They reinforce malicious stereotypes. They foster notions of Western values, high-mindedness, and moral superiority.

Post-9/11, the gloves came off. Fear-mongering replaced reason. It's used for political advantage. Muslims are maliciously targeted. They're characterized as gun-toting terrorists.

Rule of law principles don't matter. Innocent victims are persecuted for their faith, ethnicity, prominence, activism, and charity. Guilt by accusation is policy.

Some of America's best and brightest are targeted, hunted down, rounded up, falsely charged, detained, isolated, denied bail, tortured, restricted in their right to counsel, tried on secret evidence, convicted on bogus charges, and given long sentences for being Muslims in America at the wrong time.

Inaugural Hypocrisy

February 8th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

A previous article discussed America's quadrennial exercise in hypocrisy. I's institutionalized. It conceals the nation's dark side.

Pomp and circumstance hide neoliberal harshness. War is portrayed as peace. Lawless government is called legitimate. Democracy never existed and doesn't now.

Freedom in America is endangered. Bipartisan complicity plans destroying it altogether.

America is on a fast track toward tyranny and ruin. Police state laws threaten everyone.

Activism and dissent are marginalized. Increasingly they're not tolerated. Supporting what's right is called dangerous to national security.

Targeting Chavismo

February 8th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Dark Washington forces never quit. Nor do media scoundrels. Chavez is fair game. Since 1999, he's been maliciously targeted and maligned. Ill or well makes no difference.

Alberto Barrera Tyszka and Cristina Macano are unapologetic. They represent neoliberal corporate views. They got feature New York Times op-ed space. They headlined "Chavez, the missing President," saying:

Venezuela is "experiencing the very odd circumstance of being both with and without its leader; he is not here, but his voice endures."

Lynne Stewart's Struggle for Justice Continues

February 8th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Numerous previous articles discussed her case, character, and dedication to rule of law principles. She's an internationally recognized human rights lawyer.

She tirelessly worked for justice. She devoted her life and work to upholding principles too important to reject. She knew the risks and took them. She did so because it matters.

For 30 years, she defended America's poor, underprivileged, unwanted, and forgotten. Without advocates like her, they never have a chance for due process and judicial fairness.

She was targeted for representing clients prosecutors want convicted. One case made her especially vulnerable.

Obama Declares Global Cyberwar

February 8th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Throughout his tenure, Obama governed lawlessly for the monied interests that own him. He's waged no-holds-barred war on humanity.

Strategy includes homeland tyranny, fear-mongering, saber rattling, hot wars, proxy ones, drone ones, domestic political ones, geopolitical ones, financial ones, anti-populist ones, sanctions, subversion, sabotage, targeted assassinations, mass murder, cyberwar, and more.

In May 2009, Obama prioritized cybersecurity. He called cyber-threats "one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation."

"America's economic prosperity in the 21st century will depend on cybersecurity."

He ordered a top-to-bottom review. A Cyberspace Policy Review report followed. He waged cyberwar on Iran. He did so cooperatively with Israel.

In spring 2010, Iranian intelligence discovered Stuxnet malware contamination. The computer virus infected its Bushehr nuclear facility. At the time, operations were halted indefinitely.

Israel's One of World's Biggest Land-Grabbers

February 8th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

It shouldn't surprise. Israel stole Palestinian land for decades. In 1948, it stole 78% of historic Palestine. In 1967 it took the rest.

It denies Palestinians the right to their own land. It declares it state land. A new study explained more. On January 29, Haaretz headlined "Israel ranks among the world's most harmful land-grabbers."

It's a new form of colonialism. Israel prioritizes it. Palestinian land worth tens of billions of dollars has been stolen. Israel plans taking all parts of historic Palestine it wants.

Israel's 19th Knesset

February 8th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

On January 22, Israelis elected 120 19th Knesset members. Over 80% of its members are extremist hardliners. The Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) assessed prospects ahead.

Israel's current body is its most extremist. Future prospects look worse. Polls suggest "we may be heading towards a more hardline" body.

Current legislators enacted numerous anti-democratic laws. Warning flags are raised. Flashing red lights signal worse times ahead.

Netanyahu's Apartheid Government

February 8th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Amos Oz is a noted Israeli academic, author, journalist, and novelist. He's also a vocal Netanyahu critic. More on his recent comments below.

It's well known that Israel's government reflects militarized occupation, colonialism and apartheid. It's done to enforce harshness. It continues because it's profitable. Doing so breaches international law.

The 1973 International Convention for the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid (the Apartheid Convention) called it state-sanctioned discriminatory "inhuman" racism.

It's "committed for the purpose of establishing and maintaining domination by one racial group of persons over any other racial group of persons and systematically oppressing them."

Apartheid is an international crime. The above definition builds on the 1965 International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

The 1998 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court calls apartheid a crime under the Court’s jurisdiction. For 45 years, Israel flagrantly breached the law.
