Obama in Israel

March 21st, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

His visit bodes ill, not good. He left late Tuesday night. On March 20, he arrived around noon Israeli time.

Secretary of State John Kerry came earlier. Scores of officials, aides and security personnel accompanied him and Obama.

Around 15,000 Israeli police provide security. So do US secret service and its Israeli counterpart.

Pakistan in Search of New Future

March 21st, 2013

Mahboob A. Khawaja, PhD

Pakistan is at critical crossroads. Its moral, intellectual and socio-economic and political capacity and lifelines are undermined by its own wicked rulers. If there were any educated, honest and intelligent political leaders of vision and integrity, they would worry about its present and future and try to pursue a navigational Change. Could the THINKING PEOPLE of Pakistan reverse the course of junk history and make a new beginning based on the ideology and values of the concept of Pakistan? Could the new generations of educated, honest and intelligent Pakistanis initiate new political system and institutions, produce proactive visionary leadership to extend intellectual security and help to protect the integrity and security of the besieged nation?

A Bitter Moment in Obama’s Presidency His “Grand Bargain” Is Dead; Sequester Cut Is Here to Stay

March 21st, 2013

Eric Zuesse

Obama’s biggest plan for the economy, his “Grand Bargain” that he has been working toward, with the Republicans, since at least four days before his first inauguration, essentially died on Sunday, March 17th, of 2013.

A top Senate Republican said then that trading cuts to Social Security and Medicare, for hikes on taxes that the middle class pay, would be acceptable to Senate Republicans. But the Republican House Speaker, John Boehner, said the same day that such a deal would never pass his chamber: “The president got his tax hikes on January 1. The talk about raising revenue is over.” His chamber won’t pass any tax-hikes at all, he said, on ABC’s “This Week.”

America's Genocidal Iraq War

March 20th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

March 19 marks its 10th anniversary. Permanent occupation is policy. Killing, destruction, toxic pollution, and human misery remain unabated. Pre-2003 Iraq no longer exists.

America's Iraq war is one of history's greatest crimes. It followed Gulf War devastation and punishing sanctions.

They caused about 1.5 million deaths. Most were young children. Up to 7,000 died monthly. Former UN humanitarian coordinator Dennis Halliday resigned in protest. He refused to be part of what he called "genocide."

Gideon Polya keeps count. From 1990 - 2011, he estimates 1.7 million violent deaths, 2.9 million avoidable ones (from sanctions, disease, deprivation and displacement), up to six million refugees, and a dysfunctional, repressive occupied nation.

Grand Theft Cyprus

March 20th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Cyprus is tiny. Its population numbers about a million. Its GDP is miniscule by Western standards. It's 0.2% of Europe's economy. It's entrapped under Eurozone straightjacket rules.

They impose financial tyranny. Dissimilar countries surrender monetary and fiscal control. Doing so abandons effective ways to combat recessions.

They can't devalue their currencies to make exports more competitive. They can't print money freely. They can't spend, spend, spend.

Escalating Syria's War

March 20th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Syria is Washington's war. It was planned years ago. At issue is regime change. America tolerates no independent governments. It wants pro-Western puppet ones replacing them.

Death squad terror is policy. Washington upped the stakes. Headlines suggest chemical weapons use. Both sides trade accusations. Nothing's verified.

Mossad-connected DEBKAfile headlined "Witnesses report onset of chemical warfare in Syria," saying:

A "Reuters photographer said he (saw) people come into two Aleppo hospitals with breathing problems after the attack. They claimed people were suffocating on the streets."

Remembering Rachel Corrie

March 20th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Rachel represented the best of courageous activism. She put her body on the line for justice. She did so because it matters. She's gone but not forgotten.

Ten years ago on March 16, an Israeli bulldozer driver murdered her in cold blood. She tried stopping a Rafah refugee camp home demolition.

Eye witnesses said she climbed atop a giant Caterpillar tractor. They designed to destroy homes. They're weapons of mass destruction. Caterpillar's complicit in Israeli crimes.

Rachel spoke to the driver. She climbed down. She knelt 10 - 20 meters in front. She blocked its path with her body. She was in clear view.

Israel's Fascist Government: Part II

March 20th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

On March 18, Israel's new government was sworn in. Doing so hardened fascist rule. A previous article explained.

Israelis elected their most extremist government ever. It's hugely over-the-top. It's militantly hardline, racist and unscrupulous. It menaces the region.

It supports state-sponsored terrorism, belligerence, neoliberal harshness, and unlimited settlement expansions.

Troika partners rule. Netanyahu remains prime minister. He's an embarrassment to democratic governance. He spurns rule of law principles. He deplores peace. Expect more conflict on his watch.

Holding Harvard's Crimson Accountable

March 20th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Harvard's motto is "VERITAS." It's shield and class rings display it. At issue is anti-Palestinian bias.

Harvard Political Review (HPR) explained. It's separate from Harvard's Crimson. HC's the nation's oldest continuously published college newspaper. It began as a fortnightly. For decades it's been a daily.

It was founded in 1873. Past editors included Franklin Roosevelt and Jack Kennedy. Undergraduates staff it. Some pursue journalism careers.

HPR calls itself "America's preeminent undergraduate journal of politics and public policy." It's "nonpartisan." It's "written and published entirely by Harvard undergraduates." Harvard's Institute of Politics provides help.

Washington Post Anti-Bolivarian Propaganda

March 20th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Western media scoundrels waged war on Chavez. They did so throughout his tenure. Managed news misinformation substituted for truth and full disclosure.

Chavez is gone. Misreporting continues. Post editors march in lockstep with other media scoundrels. Doing so betrays their readers.
