After Seven Years of War in Iraq, 8 Years in Afghanistan, Opposition to War Crosses the U.S. Political Spectrum

Come Home, America: A New Anti-War Network Brings Conservatives and Progressives, Liberals and Libertarians Together to Oppose U.S. Wars and Empire

Washington, DC: Come Home, America a national network of Americans from across the political spectrum is forming on the 7th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq to oppose U.S. war and Empire. See www.ComeHomeAmerica.US.

“After 7 years of the Iraq war, 8 years of war in Afghanistan and in the midst of a ‘Long War’ projected to last decades, Americans from across the political spectrum are joining together to form a broad-based effort to oppose war and Empire,” said Kevin Zeese, executive director of Voters For Peace (www.VotersForPeace.US) who with George D. O’Neill, Jr. formerly the chairman of the Rockford Institute a leading traditional conservative intellectual think tank, is bringing right and left together to oppose U.S. wars and Empire. “Americans oppose military intervention around the globe. In fact, a December 2009 Pew Poll found that a plurality of 49% of Americans think the U.S. should ‘mind its own business internationally’ but their views are not reflected in the debate in Washington, DC. Those who oppose U.S. militarism need to join together to create effective advocacy against weapons and war spending.”

America's Secret Prisons

March 16th, 2010

by Stephen Lendman

On January 28 in TomDispatch.com, Anand Gopal headlined, "Night Raids, Hidden Detention Centers, the 'Black Jail,' and the Dogs of War in Afghanistan," recounting unreported US media stories about killings, abductions, detentions, interrogations, and torture in "a series of prisons on US military bases around the country." Bagram prison, for example, is "a facility with a notorious reputation for abusive behavior," including brutalizing torture and cold-blooded murder.

Even worse is the "Black Jail," a facility consisting of individual windowless concrete cells with bright 24-hour lighting, described by one former detainee as "the most dangerous and fearful place" in which prisoners endure appalling treatment.

Two million people took to the streets of Athens last week in the country's second general strike this month, protesting the austerity measures proposed by their socialist government. All of Greece came to a 24-hour standstill and the airport was closed as a result of the action. The only public transport was the commuter train so that protesters could reach the demonstration.

A Gathering of Vultures

March 16th, 2010

by Mary Pitt

As the Liberals in Congress struggle against the Party-of-No Republicans and the Blue Dog DINOs, the people in the lower economic level are being picked of the last flesh on their living bones by the circling vultures. After they have lost almost everything they possess by the too-big-to-fail banks and investment companies, bled by the co-payments for essential medical care for their children, and either lost their homes in foreclosure or have trouble paying their rent, the vultures have gathered for the last pickings.

One cannot long watch television without the realization of precisely what the aims are of the remaining ghouls that dog their tracks. First and foremost are the "easy credit" advertisements by which they are bombarded. If you get a paycheck, you can get money quick to last until then. It only costs you a "little" more than you borrow, (only an APR of a hundred or two), and you can spend on anything you want. If you own a car, bring in your title and get the same sweet deal. The commercials depict happy people enjoying the prospect of living it up on all that "Easy Cash".

"Jeopardizing U.S. Standing" – the Petraeus Controversy

March 15th, 2010

Michael Collins

Leaks from a recent top level briefing by General David Petraeus are causing quite a controversy. The general pointed out that, "Israeli intransigence on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was jeopardizing U.S. standing in the region." Mark Perry reported this on March 13 in Foreign Policy. Perry said, "No previous CENTCOM commander had ever expressed himself on what is essentially a political issue... "

When I read a statement like that, it's like hearing the opening music for The Twilight Zone. What on earth is Perry talking about? Every CENTCOM commander, from General Tommy Franks, through Petraeus, has endorsed the continuation of the Iraq war and occupation. That's as essentially political as you can get.

Peace Process Hypocrisy: Stillborn from Inception

March 15th, 2010

by Stephen Lendman

Journalist Henry Siegman titled his August 2007 London Review of Books article, "The Great Middle East Peace Process Scam," calling it likely "the most spectacular deception in modern diplomatic history."

This writer omits most likely calling it the no-peace peace process, stillborn from inception, while Haaretz writer Gideon Levy, on March 7, 2010, wrote "There has never been an Israeli peace camp," saying "let's call the child by its real name: The Israeli peace camp is still an unborn baby," the mother yet to become pregnant given decades of Israeli-Washington rejectionism.

Jihad blondes prove racial profiling a waste of time

March 15th, 2010

Mary Shaw

We recently learned that a Philadelphia area woman who had dubbed herself "Jihad Jane" was indicted on charges of helping Islamic jihadists carry out attacks in Europe and Asia.

"Jane", whose real name is Colleen LaRose, is a 46-year-old woman with blonde hair and light skin -- not exactly most Americans' mental image of a terrorist.

Charity CEO's Get Rich by Taking From the Poor

March 14th, 2010

The greed and selfishness that the free market capitalist economy inspires impact just about every area of social and commercial interaction in consenting societies, it seems. It's not just Wall Street and government leaders caught in the trap. It's the entire system in terms of the way that it's set to run, which moves the money ever more to the top economic tier by siphoning it from the bottom and middle ones.

Since there is a relatively fixed supply of money, it stands to reason that the more that one sector of society gets of it (often through economic disaster schemes in the patterns that Naomi Klein describes) -- the less that exists for other sections. So in the end, the country increasingly becomes a banana republic with a huge lower class, a greatly affluent upper class and not much in between.
