UK Vote on Palestinian Statehood: Hold the Cheers

October 12th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

On Monday, MPs will vote up or down on whether to recognize Palestinian statehood. Doing so is non-binding. It's largely symbolic.

Labour Friends of Palestine proposed the motion, stating:

"This House believes that the Government should recognize the state of Palestine alongside the State of Israel."

The vote follows Sweden's newly-formed center-left Prime Minister, Stefan Lofven, announcing his intention to recognize Palestinian statehood.

It's the first EU country to do so. Likely not the last. It's the 135th to recognize what's long overdue.

Veterans For Peace Three Year Campaign Removes Curfew as Vets and Allies Protest the Wars, Honor The Dead

Each October 7 for the last three years, the date of the US invasion of Afghanistan, members of Veterans For Peace and their allies have gathered at the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Lower Manhattan for a soulful ceremony. Their purpose: to mark another year of a war in Afghanistan and call for peace, to honor all whose lives are destroyed by war and to expand the First Amendment right to peaceably assemble. This year, they were finally able to do so without facing a small army of police threatening arrest if the ceremony went past the arbitrary 10 pm curfew placed on the memorial.

And this year, veterans and allies had more reasons to gather: to protest new wars being waged by President Obama without approval of Congress or the United Nations and to remember the much-loved Jacob David George, a veteran of three tours in Afghanistan, who died of ‘moral injury’ three weeks before.

Racist Extremism in Israel

October 11th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Israel is no democracy. It never was one. For sure not now. Netanyahu is a world-class thug. He exceeds the worst of Sharonian evil.

Extremists around him reflect hardline fascist rule. They control Knesset poiicy. They hold over 80% of its seats.

They overwhelm moderate voices. They treat Arab representatives like potted plants. They have no say whatever. Israeli Arab citizens are enfranchised in name only.

Peace, equity and justice are convenient illusions. Hardline rule prevails. State terror reflects official policy. So does institutionalized racism.

Jews alone are wanted. Muslims are persecuted for praying to the wrong God. Occupied Palestinians have no rights whatever.

Freedom Walking for Palestine and BDS

In the 1960s, US Freedom Riders challenged racist injustice and related human rights abuses. Their activism made a difference.

They rode interstate buses across segregated southern states. They risked life and limb at times doing so.

They endured arrests for trespassing, unlawful assembly, as well as violating state and local Jim Crow laws.

They highlighted racial injustice. They did so because it matters.

They provoked violent reactions. They bolstered civil rights activism.

They gave the Movement more credibility. More meaning when it was needed most.

The Coming Revolution: Evolutionary Leap or Descent Into Chaos and Violence?

October 10th, 2014

David DeGraw

A Critical Crossroad

“A revolution is coming – a revolution which will be peaceful if we are wise enough; compassionate if we care enough; successful if we are fortunate enough – but a revolution which is coming whether we will it or not. We can affect its character; we cannot alter its inevitability. - Robert F. Kennedy

A new paradigm is organically evolving: new economic systems, sustainable communities, solar energy, organic farming, liquid democracy, worker co-ops and new media. For all the problems we are confronted by, there are existing viable solutions. There is much to feel positive about. A decentralized global uprising is undermining systems of centralized and consolidated power. A new world is being born.

Crowning the Dragon: World's Top Economy

October 10th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

It was just a matter of time before China surpassed America as the world's leading economy based on purchasing power parity (PPP).

It's an exchange rate between currencies measured by the cost of a representative basket of goods in one country v. another.

Surprisingly, China's growth happened faster than experts expected. In 2011, IMF economists estimated it would overtake America in 2016.

At the time, they projected its PPP GDP at $18,975.7 trillion v. $18,807.5 trillion for America.

They now estimate America's 2014 PPP GDP at $17.4 trillion v. $17.6 trillion for China.

The speed of China's growth is remarkable. As recently as 2005, its economy was less than half the size of America's.

Media Scoundrels Wage War

October 10th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

They're in lockstep with US imperial policy. They support its dark side unapologetically.

They're propaganda bullhorns for wrong over right. They're de facto Washington house organs.

Readers and viewers are irresponsibly cheated. They're willfully misinformed. They're treated like mushrooms. Well-watered and in the dark.

Everything they most need to know is suppressed. Truth is systematically buried.

Doing so blocks accurate news, information and analysis. Managed news misinformation substitutes.

All rubbish all the time persists. It doesn't rise to the level of bad fiction. It gives Big Lies new meaning.

Dueling Ideologies: America v. Russia and Venezuela

October 10th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

These countries are geopolitical opposites. America represents rogue governance. Permanent war is official policy.

Russia and Venezuela prioritize world peace and stability. Responsible governance. Respect for sovereign independence. Rule of law inviolability.

On October 8, Obama addressed top Pentagon commanders. He usually does it in White House surroundings.

"(N)ow was a good time for me to come over to the Pentagon," he said. "(T)o hear from our top military about the work that they're doing."

Obama's Syria Strategy

October 9th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

It's lawless. Ruthless, Transparent. Islamic State (IS) fighters hold mostly Kurdish-populated Kobani along Turkey's border under siege.

Controlling it looms. So does likely mass slaughter. Hundreds already are dead. Around 200,000 fled cross-border.

Today's Zaman is one of four English language Turkish broadsheets. On October 8, it headlined "Turkey asks US to ramp up air strikes against ISIL," saying:

They're needed to keep Islamic State fighters "from seizing" Kobani. According to Deputy Prime Minister Yalcin Akdogan:

"Our government and our related institutions have emphasized to US officials the necessity of immediately ramping up air bombardment in a more active and efficient way."

Syria is Still The Main Target

October 9th, 2014

By Dr. Elias Akleh

For the last three years, the American administration has been searching for an internationally acceptable justification to interfere militarily into Syria in an attempt to topple Al-Assad’s government. Finally, and after the ISIS beheading of two American citizens, President Obama declared ISIS a terrorist threat against the whole world not just against the region. He formed a “Coalition of the willing” and sent American fighter planes over Syrian territories ostensibly to bomb ISIS terrorist fighters. At the same time, this coalition had vowed to arm what they called “moderate” anti-Syrian rebels. The attack against Syria is a part of the American “New Middle East” project, which is part of the Zionist overall plan of creating “Greater Israel” in the Middle East.
