Politically Active Americans Facing Searches and Surveillance

September 30th, 2010

Kevin Zeese

Trend of Activist Searches Began Under Bush, Continues Under Obama

Series of Inspector General Reports Shows FBI Violating Constitutional Rights of American Peace Activists While Raids Occur in Illinois and Minneapolis

Earlier this week the FBI raided six homes of eight peace activists in Minneapolis and Chicago as well as a Minneapolis office of an antiwar group. Agents kicked down doors of homes with guns drawn, smashed furniture, and seized computers, documents, phones, and other materials without making any arrests. These groups do not use guns and bombs. They are not terrorists. Their "weapons" are leaflets, newsletters, and nonviolent demonstrations.

IRS To Investigate Rove’s American Crossroads and Other Corporate Front Groups

September 30th, 2010

Contributors to These Groups Beware – You May Not Be Anonymous for Long

Conscious Citizens Need to Continue to Push Back Against Concentrated Corporate Power

A big victory yesterday for democracy as the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Max Baucus, called for an investigation of corporate front groups and asked the Internal Revenue Service to conduct a full investigation not only of Karl Rove’s American Crossroads but all groups improperly using tax-exempt status to manipulate elections.

Concentrated corporate power is corrupting the first post-Citizens United election, but citizens are responding. Six thousand people wrote Congress as part of our American Crossroads Watch campaign demanding an investigation of Karl Rove’s American Crossroads which is raising tens of millions in secret corporate donations to support big business candidates. Congress heard us and Sen. Baucus responded. Not only did he demand an investigation, he asked the IRS to identify what tax laws have been broken by these secretive organizations. Here is a full copy of his letter to the IRS.

Turkey and Russia: Cleaning up the mess in the Middle East

September 30th, 2010

Eric Walberg

The new Ottomans and the new Byzantines are poised for an intercept as the US stumbles in the current Great Game.

The neocon plan to transform the Middle East and Central Asia into a pliant client of the US empire and its only-democracy-in-the-Middle-East is now facing a very different playing field. Not only are the wars against the Palestinians, Afghans and Iraqis floundering, but they have set in motion unforeseen moves by all the regional players.

OBAMA AND AMERICAN GLOBAL LEADERSHIP

September 30th, 2010

By Jack A. Smith

In the history of U.S. foreign policy, the insistence upon "American global leadership" has been articulated and defended by every occupant of the White House since the end of World War II in 1945.

President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are enthusiastic advocates of Washington's supreme global power, its Top Cop role and penchant for manipulating and controlling world affairs by any means necessary.

For a few decades, most Americans supported this "leading" role for the U.S., particularly during the 45-year Cold War against the Soviet Union and the socialist world. But times have changed during the last two decades since the implosion of the USSR — and so has public opinion, though the news hasn't reached Washington.

Pakistanis have great deal of emotional attachment with the Iranian people: Shahid R. Siddiqi

September 29th, 2010

Kourosh Ziabari

The 2010 Pakistan flood was one of the most unpleasant and painful incidents of the year which attracted widespread international attention due to its extensiveneSiddiqi and destructive impacts. The floods started in July following heavy monsoon rains and overflow of the Indus River in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan regions of Pakistan. It is estimated that more than two thousand people lost their lives and over a million homes were destroyed since the flooding began. According to the United Nations estimates, over 21 million people have been injured or displaced as a result of the devastative flood.

Pakistani journalist and former Air Force employee Shahid R. Siddiqi joined me in an interview to discuSiddiqi the aftermaths of the unprecedented flood which encompaSiddiqied the whole Pakistan in a matter of days and caused serious damages to the country's agriculture, industry, energy sector, infrastructures and even politics. Mr. Siddiqi answered my questions about the government's management of the flood and the distribution of humanitarian aid sent by different countries to the flood-hit regions. He explained that how the unanticipated disaster paralyzed Pakistan in an astonishing way and surprised the unprepared government which failed to manage the crisis appropriately. In this interview, I also seized the opportunity to ask Mr. Siddiqi some questions about the prospect of Iran – Pakistan relations and Pakistan's stance on Iran's nuclear program.

Roger Waters and the Bombs of David

September 29th, 2010

Gilad Atzmon

Ynet reported today that The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) on Monday criticized rock star Roger Waters for simply conveying the truth.

During Waters’ performances of “Goodbye Blue Sky,” in Toronto, an animated scene projects images of planes dropping bombs in the shape of Jewish Stars of David followed by dollar signs. It should be noted that the clip also displays bombs in the shape of crosses, Muslim crescents and a fuel company's logo.

We had better face it once and for all: artists are often significantly far ahead of our corrupted ‘liberal’ politicians, who, for some reason, keep silent instead of confronting the Jewish State.

Imperial Israel

September 29th, 2010

by Stephen Lendman

In his book "Against Empire," Michael Parenti defines imperialism as "the process whereby the dominant politico-economic interests of one nation expropriate for their own enrichment the land, labor, raw materials, and markets of another people."

In a September 21 article, titled "What Do Empires Do?" he says "Imperialism is what (they) do." They don't just pursue "power for power's sake. There are (significant) interests at stake, fortunes to be made many times over," including land, mineral wealth, cheap labor, and easily exploited markets. They're there, so take them, the strong dominating the weak. Besides seizing and controlling Syrian and Lebanese land, it's how Israel rules Palestine, no regional country a match for its military might with no shyness about using it.

WAR CRIMES, AMERICA’S MORAL MELTDOWN

September 29th, 2010

By Gordon Duff

MASS KILLINGS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN “WINK AND NOD” ARMY POLICY

Over 40 years ago, I was in Vietnam, part of an American military effort draped with shame and failure. My Lai was the crowning achievement of the war, nearly 600 women and children mowed down by automatic weapons fire. The man we know as General Colin Powell helped shove it under a rug. Lt. Calley, worse than many of Himmler’s SS executed for war crimes during World War II, became a hero to many Americans. Killing civilians was “policy” in Vietnam. You could murder anyone you wanted as long as they could be made to look like enemy combatants. If you killed them with a knife, even if others held them to the ground, you were awarded a Silver Star. This isn’t conjecture, I know this to be a fact.

Want to find real community in the United States?

September 28th, 2010

Katherine Smith, PhD

Want to find real community in the United States? Go to Portland Oregon. Across the USA, from New Hampshire, the “Live Free or Die” state to Portland, Oregon, there are 50 “City Repair” projects springing up around America.  Americans have proven they can confront suppressive governments and come out the winner.

Portland City Repair began when the citizens of Portland wanted to convert certain public areas of their community into, “Public Space that fosters participatory democracy.”

Without explanation, the Portland City Council and the its Department of Transportation said, “No,” essentially relaying to Portlanders, “Your public spaces aren’t reeeeally public.”
