Drone warfare, its legality, ethics and military use, was examined at a workshop held on the campus of Johns Hopkins University, at Remsen Hall, in Baltimore, MD, on Tuesday afternoon, April 16, 2013. One of the panel members was Medea Benjamin, a peace & social justice activist and cofounder of CODEPINK. She is also the author of the book, “Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control.” It was disclosed during the discussion that U.S. Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC) has admitted that “over 4,700 people” have been killed in drone strikes. Ms. Benjamin said that the opponents of “killer drones” need to work hard to give the use of these lethal weapons, “a bad name!” She underscored that recent polls show that a “negative image” on their use in growing throughout the country. Over four years ago, President Barack Obama promised to close Guantanamo Prison! It still remains open. At noon, on Thursday, April 11, 2013, over a hundred Human Rights activists staged a "Day of Action" demonstration in front of the White House, (and, at many other sites around the country, too), to remind him to keep his word on this important public policy, legal and moral issue. At the end of the rally, Peace & Justice Activist Frank Cordaro of the Catholic Worker Community in Des Moines, Iowa, read a poem, entitled, "Is It True?" It was written by one of the prisoners at Guantanamo.

The War You Don't See is a 2010 British documentary film written, produced and directed by John Pilger with Alan Lowery, which challenges the media for the role they played in the Iraq, Afghanistan, and Israel/Palestine conflicts.

The film begins with footage of an unreported July 12, 2007 Baghdad airstrike and black and white stills of the victims of the U.S. Occupation of Iraq. In his opening narration Pilger quotes World War I British Prime Minister David Lloyd George's comment to Guardian editor C. P. Scott that, "If the people really knew the truth, the war would be stopped tomorrow." He goes on to state that this film will draw on his own experience as a war correspondent to question the role of the media in conflicts such as Iraq and Afghanistan...

One of the world’s leading intellectuals and political activists, Professor Noam Chomsky has been awarded the UCD Ulysses Medal, the highest honour that University College Dublin can bestow.

The award was inaugurated in 2005, as part of the university’s sesquicentennial celebrations, to highlight the ‘creative brilliance’ of UCD alumnus James Joyce. It is awarded to individuals whose work has made an outstanding global contribution.

Syrian President Bashar Assad warned in comments broadcast Friday April 5, 2013 that the fall of the Syrian government or the breakup of his nation will cause a "domino effect" that will fuel Middle East instability for years, in his sharpest warning yet about the potential fallout of his country's civil war on neighboring states.

In an interview with the Turkish TV station Ulusal Kanal broadcast Friday, Syrian President Assad accused his neighbors of stoking the revolt against his government, saying "we are surrounded by countries that help terrorists and allow them to enter Syria." But he warned that those same countries may eventually pay a price down the road.

"Everybody knows that if the disturbances in Syria reach the point of the country's breakup, or terrorist forces control Syria, or if the two cases happen, then this will immediately spill over into neighboring countries first, and later there will be a domino effect that will reach countries across the Middle East," he said.

He also lashed out at Turkey's prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was a close ally of Assad before the crisis began but then turned into one of his harshest critics.

"When the prime minister (Erdogan), or the government or officials get involved in shedding Syrian people's blood there is no place for bridges between me and them or the Syrian people that don't respect them," Assad said.

Turkey has been one of the strongest backers of the Syrian Islamist "opposition," and has provided it with logistical support and shelter.

"The Arab League lacks legitimacy. It's a league that represents the Arab states, not the Arab people, so it can't grant or retract legitimacy," he also stated in reference to the recent move by the league to give Syria's seat to the Doha coalition headed by Moaz al-Khatib.

The president also used the interview to quash rumors that he had been killed by one of his guards in the capital Damascus.

Asked by a journalist whether he is still alive, Assad told Ulusal Kanal: "I am present in front of you and not in a shelter. These are mere rumors."

He said he is living as usual in Syria and is not hiding in underground shelters.
