In an address to the United Nations General Assembly, President Obama openly embraced an aggressive military doctrine backed by previous administrations on using armed force beyond the international norm of self-defense. Obama told the world that the United States is prepared to use its military to defend what he called "our core interests" in the Middle East: U.S. access to oil. "[Obama] basically came out and said the U.S. is an imperialist nation and we're going to do whatever we need to do to conquer areas [and] take resources from people around the world," says independent journalist Jeremy Scahill.

On Wed. Sept. 18th, in front of Penn Station in Bmore, Dr. Margaret Flowers shared her views on the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement. She labeled it, “NAFTA on steroids.” Dr. Flowers underscored that the treaty has been “negotiated in secret,” and its terms, “classified.” She said that President Barack Obama has asked to “Fast Track” the treaty. This would allow him to sign it into law before the U.S.Congress is given an “up or down vote on it.” In other words, the measure would not go through the usual legislative democratic process, with hearings, transparency, the calling of witnesses, etc.

Try this for an example of what may be in our future. A U.S. law required food companies to disclose whether tuna is “dolphin-safe” or not. A Mexican company, however, under NAFTA, complained that it “restricted trade.” It won the case!

Whatever is in the final version of the “Trans-Pacific Partnership,” will become the Law of our Land. It will supersede all of our laws and regulations dealing with food, public health and safety, workers rights, the internet, the environment, etc. The AFL-CIO has passed a Resolution opposing the TPP.

Protesting Sen. Barbara Mikulski’s Pro-War With Syria Stance

On Saturday afternoon, September 14th, peace activists staged a protest action at Broadway & Baltimore Streets, in the Fell’s Point area of Bmore. It was directed at U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski, a Democrat. Despite openly conceding that the majority of Marylanders are against any U.S. intervention in Syria’s bloody Civil War, she declared that she will vote for military strikes against Assad’s government. Meanwhile, the U.S. is currently arming the opposition in that lethal conflict, which includes factions loyal to al-Qadeda. Go figure! Mikulski’s pro-War antics, of course, please the Military-Industrial Complex and the pro-war zealots in the U.S. media. After assembling, the activists, with their antiwar banners and posters flying, marched down Broadway to Thames Street, to pay a visit to one of Mikulski’s branch offices. A rally/march was held in Fell’s Point, in Bmore, on September 14th. Peace and social justice activists expressed their views opposing any U.S. intervention in Syria. Their focus however was specifically on the U.S. senator from Maryland - Barbara Mikulski. She has an office in the area. Recently, the Senator made in clear that she will vote for military strikes in Syria, despite the overwhelming opposition to any such war by her constituents. She said: “There is no way that bombing Syria is going to help anybody...The U.S. is drone-bombing civilians in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia and other places around the world as it is. We’re already killing civilians left and right...We should be talking about a negotiated settlement [in Syria] and woking towards a cease fire. We should not be going to war.”
