Venezuelans across the globe Sunday appeared to be turning out in droves to reject the government’s controversial plan to rewrite the constitution at a time when the South American nation is staggering under protests and violence.

Venezuelans in more than 75 countries and across the nation began lining up in the pre-dawn hours to vote in a largely symbolic referendum to denounce plans to convene a National Constituent Assembly that many fear is another attempt by President Nicolás Maduro to shutdown dissent and hold onto power. With almost 20 million registered voters in Venezuela, the opposition has been hoping to break the 10 million mark.

Even so, the administration has said it won't recognize the results of the referendum and will move forward with the constitutional overhaul regardless of the outcome.

A nurse aged 61 has been shot dead while waiting to vote in an unofficial, opposition-organised referendum in Venezuela's capital, Caracas.

Men on motorbikes fired at a queue, killing her and wounding three others.

Venezuela is in crisis, and more than 100 people have died in political clashes since April.

More than 7m people cast ballots in Sunday's vote, according to a group of academics monitoring the referendum, which has no legal status.

Cocaine production in Colombia reached an all-time high for the second straight year in 2016, as coca cultivation in the South American country surged 52 percent, spanning 146,000 hectares, compared with 96,000 in 2015. The 2016 crops produced an estimated 866 metric tons of cocaine, an increase of 35 percent compared to 2015. Cocaine use appears to be increasing in the two largest markets, North America and Europe.

Thousands of people flocked to the Polish Parliament building Sunday to voice opposition to the overhaul of the judiciary citing concerns that the new measures erodes judicial independence and encroaches on the rule of law. Critics of the measures consider it to be an assault on the Supreme Court, which among other issues, is tasked with confirming the validity of election results, and say it will dissolve the established separation of powers enshrined in the constitution.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to “chop off the heads” of traitors during a speech in Istanbul commemorating the victims of last year’s botched coup attempt and celebrating the government’s victory. Last year, wholesale salmon prices rose by 50 percent due to an outbreak of sea lice from Sweden to Norway and Chile, according to The Guardian. A sea louse, or common salmon louse, is a parasite that feeds on the blood, skin, and slime of salmon. Sea lice killed thousands of tons of farmed fish in 2016 and caused skin lesions and secondary infections in millions more fish. Now the parasites infest nearly half of Scotland’s salmon farms.

Visa Inc. has a new offer for small merchants: take thousands of dollars from the card giant to upgrade their payment technology. In return, the businesses must stop accepting cash.The company unveiled the initiative on Wednesday as part of a broader effort to steer Americans away from using old-fashioned paper money. The EPA just told Monsanto they could go ahead and bypass spraying our crops with carcinogenic chemicals like Round Up and breed them right into the crops themselves. Sears has a court hearing next week where the company will request permission to halt both its retiree benefit payments along with special payments it has made for some time to top up the underfunded pension fund. Many of Sears’ 16,000 retirees fear if the company is allowed to stop making pension contribtions, they will receive reduced pensions. They also don’t like the idea of losing their medical, dental and life insurance benefits.
