Russia "is forced to react to everything that is happening around" the country, Russian President Vladimir Putin said commenting on recent reports about Georgia's and Ukraine's possible accession to NATO. Moscow would have an "extremely negative" reaction to the continued expansion of the Alliance towards the borders of the Russian Federation. This is a threat to the security of the state, Putin said in an interview with Fox News.
When the USSR left the German territory, it was promised that NATO would not move to the east beyond German borders. However, NATO troops had subsequently appeared in many countries afterwards.

According to Germany's interior ministry, Bavarian state police will patrol the border in order to check for migrants entering the country. In a statement issued Sunday, the ministry said that Bavarian police will be able to conduct checks along the country's southern border with Austria "at the request or with the consent of federal police."Since 2015, Europe has been facing a migration crisis, triggered by armed conflicts and economic hardships in Africa and the Middle East. The EU has been struggling to accommodate hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing war-torn countries, with a major part of them heading to Germany.
China expands surveillance of sewage to police illegal drug use
Dozens of cities across China are applying an unusual forensic technique to monitor illegal drug use: chemically analysing sewage for traces of drugs, or their metabolites, excreted in urine.
One southern city, Zhongshan, a drug hotspot, is also monitoring waste water to evaluate the effectiveness of its drug-reduction programmes, says Li Xiqing, an environmental chemist at Peking University in Beijing who is working with police in these cities.
Li says Zhongshan police have already used the technique to help track down and arrest a drug manufacturer. He says a handful of cities are planning to use data from waste water to set targets for police arrests of drug users..
Although illegal drug use has been monitored through wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) in other countries, including Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Germany, most studies have collected data for epidemiological research rather than for setting policies.

A federal court has denied an attempt by the Environmental Protection Agency to dismiss a lawsuit seeking to ban the use of fluoride under the Toxic Substances Control Act. The substances added to municipal water supplies known by the name fluoride are actually a combination of unpurified byproducts of phosphate mining. In the United States thousands of tons of fluorosilicic acid is recovered from phosphoric acid plants and then used for water fluoridation. During this process the fluoride ion is created.
This process of taking waste from the phosphate industry and putting it into drinking water has long been criticized for its effects on human health and the environment.

The National Court of Justice of Ecuador has ordered the preventive detention of the country's former president Rafael Correa and requested that Interpol apprehend him for extradition.
The request for Correa’s detention was filed by the country’s chief prosecutor on Tuesday. The prosecution is accusing Correa, who served as the president of Ecuador from 2007 to 2017, of being involved in the kidnapping of Fernando Balda, a former opposition lawmaker, in 2012 in Colombia - charges that Correa vehemently denies.
Balda himself was charged with orchestrating a foiled coup attempt in 2010. The charges were filed when the lawmaker was in Colombia, from where he was eventually deported to Ecuador in 2012 and served a year in prison for endangering state security.
Correa is living in Belgium with his family.

Americans make up only four percent of the global population but they own 40 percent of the world's firearms, a new study said Monday.There are more than one billion firearms in the world, 85 percent of those are in the hands of civilians, with the remainder held by law enforcement and the military, according to the Small Arms Survey.
The survey, produced by the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, says its estimates based on multiple sources, including civilian firearms registration data from 133 countries and territories and survey results in 56 countries.
Of the 857 million guns owned by civilians, 393 million are in the United States - more than all of the firearms held by ordinary citizens in the other top 25 countries combined.
"Ordinary American people buy approximately 14 million new and imported guns every year.
Americans have access to powerful firearms that are not available in many other countries due to tighter legislation.
