What’s the difference between Nazi and Zionist war criminals?

January 13th, 2011

By Alan Hart

Short answer: Great effort is made to hunt down and prosecute suspected Nazi war criminals, no effort is made to bring Zionist war criminals to justice.

On 13 January, the BBC’s World News web site had a lengthy story with the headline Global Nazi investigations rise for a second year. The writer of it was one Mario Cacciottolo who, quick research informed me, “Runs a photography website, plays poker, is a BBC journalist and grew up in Malta's red-light district.” (His other 50 listed stories for the BBC include “Brilliant” news for lesbian couples and What sort of man wears mantyhose?)

Post-Quake Haiti: One Year Later

January 13th, 2011

by Stephen Lendman

On January 12, 2010 at 21:53 GMT, 4:53PM in Haiti, the earth massively shook. For affected Haitians, it never stopped. The combination of initial shock, devastating destruction, vast loss of life, injuries, suffering, and human misery disrupted millions of Haitians already overwhelmed by crushing hardships.

A year ago, people wandered the streets dazed, searching for loved ones. Lost power cut communications except by satellite phone. Haiti's quake vulnerability was well known but little reported, and no advance precautions were taken.

Roots of Arizona's Violence

January 13th, 2011

by Stephen Lendman

As expected, America's major media won't explain it. Nation magazine editor Katrina vanden Heuvel ducked the issue, saying it's "a time for grief, not grievance." Blaming a "crazed act of a clearly unstable man," she called it "an assassination of democracy....shut(ting) down speech to slay those seeking its exercise," then added "we still don't know whether (violent rhetoric) was responsible for last weekend's horror."

Christian Arabs’ Plight: Foreign ‘Protection’ Counterproductive

January 12th, 2011

By Nicola Nasser*

Suddenly, the U. S. - European alliance is acting to protect the “existence” of the Christian Arab minority against the Muslim Arab majority whose very existence is besieged and threatened by this same alliance, drawing on a wide spread Islamophobia while at the same time exacerbating Islamophobia among western audiences whom the international financial crisis is now crushing to the extent that it does not spare them time or resources to question the real political motives of their governments, which have been preoccupied for decades now with restructuring the Arab world geographically, demographically, politically and culturally against the will of its peoples with a pronounced aim of creating a “new Middle East.”

Israel Negotiates With Bulldozer Blades and Hydraulic Jackhammers

January 12th, 2011

By Khalid Amayreh in occupied East Jerusalem

As Hillary Clinton sought a stronger "alliance" with the Gulf's Arab states, America's real friend and client, which is Israel, was demolishing yet another Arab property in occupied East Jerusalem. The demolished building was the Shepherd hotel, which served once as home to the former Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, the late Haj Amin Husseini.

The demolition of the highly symbolic building was carried out despite objections from many quarters, including the European Union and Obama administration.

The visibly helpless Palestinian Authority (PA) once again appealed to the international community to take a strong stand against Israel.

To Jon and Colbert: From Activist Reporter Looking for a District to Serve

Generations of children grew up watching Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite and many dreamed of growing up and being them. My dream was to grow up and be Brenda Starr, the redheaded ace investigative journalist of the Sunday Comics.

Edward R. Murrow turned public opinion against the extremism and fear mongering of Senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s.

Murrow had an even more direct effect when he reported on the case of Milo Radulovich, an Air Force lieutenant who was stripped of his commission after being charged with associating with communists. Murrow’s broadcast resulted in Radulovich’s reinstatement.

Bradley Manning and the Rule of Law

January 11th, 2011

By Kevin Zeese

Bradley Manning

The case of Private Bradley Manning raises legal issues about his pre-trial detention, freedom of speech and the press, as well as proving his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Putting aside Manning’s guilt or innocence, if Bradley Manning saw the Afghan and Iraq war diaries as well as the diplomatic cables published by WikiLeaks what should he have done? And, what should be the proper response of government to their publication?

A high point in the application of the rule of law to war came in the Nuremberg trials where leaders in Germany were held accountable for World War II atrocities. Justice Robert Jackson, who served as the chief prosecutor in the Nuremberg trials while on leave from the U.S. Supreme Court, said “If certain acts of violation of treaties are crimes, they are crimes whether the United States does them or whether Germany does them, and we are not prepared to lay down a rule of criminal conduct against others which we would not be willing to have invoked against us.”

One of the key outcomes of the Nuremberg trials was that people who commit war crimes or crimes against humanity will be held accountable even if they were following orders. This is known as Nuremberg Principle IV which states: “The fact that a person acted pursuant to order of his Government or of a superior does not relieve him from responsibility under international law provided a moral choice was in fact possible to him.” The Nuremberg principles were enshrined in a series of treaties.

America's Looted Generation: The kids are NOT alright!

January 11th, 2011

By Jane Stillwater

Here in America today, Old White Guys tend to be rather angry at the way things are going -- but theirs is not the generation that should be getting truly pissed off. The OWGs are doing fine financially. They have nothing to complain about.

Their walkers and scooters are paid for by MediCare.

Their pensions come regularly in the mail.

Social Security buoys them up, they have lots of savings left over from the good times, they have home equity to fall back on and they don't have to worry about finding a job.
