India's Sham Democracy

May 20th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

India is like America. Democracy is fantasy. Two major parties dominate.

In India most often. Others compete. At most, some become junior coalition partners.

Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) governance control things. They take turns. They're largely two sides of the same coin.

Indian elections ran in nine phases. From April 7 to May 12. The longest election in Indian history. Over 800 million were eligible to vote.

Over 8,000 candidates competed. They did so for India's Lok Sabha. It's House of the People. Its lower house. Parliamentarians represent 543 constituencies.

Turnout exceeded 66%. Highest ever for general elections. On May 16, results were announced.

Ukraine's Fascist Roots

May 19th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

US-installed putschists are fascist extremists. Elevating them to power should scare everyone.

Ukraine is the epicenter of European fascist reemergence. It's a freedom-destroying cancer.

It threatens world peace. It risks global conflict. It doesn't surprise. Its roots are deep.

Washington offers full support. It's longstanding. It dates from 1945. Svoboda and Right Sector parties are modern-day Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) heirs.

Its Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) leaders were Nazi collaborators. They fought with Hitler's Waffen SS Galician Division.

Their forces massacred hundreds of thousands. Their hero was Stepan Bandera. He headed OUN-B. It terrorized Ukrainian and Polish Jews.

His legacy thrives in Ukraine today. His heirs openly display his OUN-B red and black flag. They enjoy full US support.

Svoboda's slogan is "Ukraine for Ukrainians." Bandera said the same thing. He wanted Ukraine made ethnically pure. Mass extermination followed.

Donetsk, Lugansk, Kharkov Opt Out of Sham May 25 Elections

May 19th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

They mock legitimate ones. Choices exclude democracy. Fascist ones alone will compete.

Results are largely pre-determined. No matter who wins, ordinary Ukrainians lose.

Eastern regions won't participate. Days earlier, Donetsk and Lugansk leaders opted out. On May 18, Kharkov's Yuri Apukhtin said:

His "region will hold a referendum on independence following Donetsk and Lugansk."

"Our task is not to participate in Ukrainian presidential elections in any case."

Sacking NYT Executive Editor Jill Abramson

May 18th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

In September 2011, she succeeded Bill Keller. On May 14, The Times headlined "Times Ousts Jill Abramson as Executive Editor, Elevating Dean Baquet."

It reflects "an abrupt change of leadership." Times chairman/publisher Arthur Sulzberger, Jr. claimed "an issue with management in the newsroom."

Times staff familiar with her relationship with Sulzberger suggested she was "polarizing and mercurial." She "clash(ed) with (managing editor) Baquet.

He was "angered" over Abramson's "job offer" to senior London Guardian editor Janine Gibson. She wanted her as "co-managing editor."

"Conflict between them arose." Sulzberger got involved. He decided earlier to sack her. On May 15, he appointed Baquet executive editor.

"(N)either side (explained) detail(s) about Abramson's firing," said The Times. She was its first female executive editor in its 160-year history.

Justifying the Unjustifiable

May 18th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Navi Pillay is UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. She's a reliable imperial tool. She betrays her mandate. She does so consistently.

She disgraces the office she holds. She twists vital truths irresponsibly. She substitutes misinformation rubbish.

She serves Western interests exclusively. She's up to her old tricks again.

Her new report is titled "Report on the human rights situation in Ukraine." It’s infested with lies. It whitewashes what's most important to reveal.

On the one hand, it totally ignores fascist putschists usurping power. Imposing hardline rule. Governing lawlessly.

Targeting all opposition elements for elimination. Bearing full responsibility for nationwide violence. Especially in Eastern Ukraine.

Terrorizing Palestinian Children

May 18th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

It's longstanding Israeli practice. They're treated like adults. Each year, about 700 are lawlessly arrested.

They're detained. They're brutally interrogated. They're prosecuted in military courts.

They have no legitimacy whatever. They give kangaroos a bad name.

Since 2,000, over 9,000 Palestinian children under age 18 were treated this way. Many became traumatized. No-holds-barred brutality defines official Israeli policy.

On May 12, Defence for Children International Palestine (DCI-P) headlined "Rising numbers of Palestinian children subjected to solitary confinement."

They're isolated for "interrogation purposes," said DCI-P. Over 21% of them are treated this way. It's 2% more than in 2012.

Kiev Waging War on Its Own People

May 17th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Imagine Western-supported putschists toppling Ukraine's legitimate government. Imagine usurping power lawlessly.

Imagine fascism replacing democracy. Imagine it with US complicity and support.

Imagine waging war on ordinary people. Ones rejecting putschist power. On freedom fighters.

On Ukraine's best and bravest. On people wanting to live free. For fundamental rights everyone deserves.

Imagine being called terrorists for doing so. On May 16, Kiev declared Donetsk and Lugansk regions "terrorism organizations."

On May 11, they held legitimate referendums. They voted overwhelming for local autonomy. They proclaimed themselves sovereign states.

Fake Ukrainian National Unity Talks

May 17th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Coup-appointed prime minster Arseniy Yatsenyuk announced so-called "roundtable for national unity" talks. On Wednesday, they began in Kiev.

So-called groups with "legitimate political goals (and) no blood on their hands" were invited.

Coup-appointed officials ran things. Former presidents Leonid Kravchuk and Leonid Kuchma attended.

So did coup-friendly parliamentarians, regime vetted presidential candidates, other government officials, various coup supporters, businessmen, and hand-picked representatives of selected public and international organizations.

Yatsenyuk said Ukraine faces a "super complicated task." He called so-called "national dialogue" important.

He claimed crisis conditions could only be resolved diplomatically. He said so while Ukraine's military, special National Guard units, neo-Nazi Right Sector thugs, and foreign mercenaries wage war on Eastern Ukrainian freedom fighters.

Iranian Nuclear Roulette Continues

May 17th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Last November, Iran and P5+1 countries agreed on interim Joint Plan of Action (JPA) terms. Obama twice breached them. He did so unilaterally.

In mid-February, talks resumed. Focus is on agreeing on a comprehensive "permanent resolution" by July 20. Previous articles raised doubts.

Longstanding US policy calls for regime change. Iran's nuclear program is entirely peaceful. No evidence suggests otherwise.

It doesn't matter. "My goal is to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon," said Obama. "All options are on the table."

Iranians have just cause for concern. US agreements aren't worth the paper they're written on.

Fighting for Internet Freedom

May 16th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

A previous article discussed Obama's war to destroy it. In 2008, he pledged support. He called "preserv(ing) the benefits of open competition on the Internet" essential.

He lied saying so. He's waging war on free expression. He prioritizes intellectual property protection over Internet freedom.

He's targeting it for elimination altogether. He appointed corporatist Tom Wheeler FCC chairman. He deplores Internet freedom.
