Israel/America: A Rambling Poem

September 18th, 2009

Remi Kanazi

I recently appeared on GRITtv with Laura Flanders to perform a spoken word poem entitled Israel/America: A Rambling Poem. The poem appeared after a segment on BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions).

I recognize this is not the traditional format, but because of the overt political nature of the piece, I thought it may be of interest.

I am the editor of the recently released collection of poetry, Poets For Palestine. I will be touring the US and Canada this fall on the upcoming Poets For Palestine tour.

A Taste of AFRICOM: Some history on Somalia to put the most recent attacks by the Obama administration into perspective

The True Story Of Black Hawk Down

American commandos killed Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, one of the most wanted Islamic militants in Africa, in a daylight raid in southern Somalia on 15 September 2009. This attack is a good "indication of the Obama administration’s willingness to use force against Al Qaeda’s growing influence in the region.”

“American officials on Monday provided few details but confirmed that Special Operations forces commandos, operating from a nearby American warship, participated in the helicopter raid… The helicopters, either with sniper bullets or air-to-surface missiles, quickly disabled the trucks, according to villagers in the area, and several of the Shabab fighters tried to fire back. Shabab leaders said that six foreign fighters, including Nabhan, were quickly killed, along with three Somali Shabab.

“‘We are very upset, very upset,’ said a Shabab official from the town of Merka, near where the raid happened. ‘This is a big loss for us.’ Ahmed Gaabow, a resident of the area, said that the helicopters then landed and retrieved the bodies, apparently for identification purposes.”

Now 'all Guns' must be listed on your next 2010 tax return!

September 17th, 2009

NOTE: There seems to be confusion as to the legitimacy of SB-2099. Searches don't confirm it's existence. HR 45 is a real bill but has no co-sponsors and won't be passed.

Is bogus and uses fear tactics.

You should check there work before spreading more lies!

The first part is usually the story or rumor and the last part either backs it up or dismisses it. In this case, neither has any hope of passing.

#-1 A pending Senate bill would require that all handgun owners list their guns on their federal income tax returns. False!
http://www.snopes.com/politics/guns/taxreturns.asp

#-2 A bill before Congress would prohibit ownership of handguns by those who have not obtained firearm licenses. True! However no one supports it!

from Philip Bondank

As if we didn’t have enough to get upset about! If you have a gun, I hope it isn't registered!

Senate Bill SB-2099 will require us to put on our 2009 1040 federal tax form all guns that you have or own. It will require fingerprints and a tax of $50 per gun.

This bill was introduced on Feb. 24, 2009, by the Omama staff. BUT this bill will only become public knowledge 30 days after the new law becomes effective! This is an amendment to the Internal Revenue Act o f 1986. This means that the Finance Committee has passed this without the Senate voting on it at all. Trust Obama ? ... you must be kidding! The full text of the IRS amendment is on the U.S. Senate homepage, U.S. Senate. You can find the bill by doing a search by the bill number, SB-2099. You know who to call; I strongly suggest you do. Please send a copy of this e-mail to every gun owner you know.

Under siege: Lebanon’s Palestinians 27 years after the Sabra Shatila Massacre

September 17th, 2009

Camp Notes: Sliding toward more Nahr el Bareds?

Franklin Lamb Martyr’s Square, Shatila Camp

Author’s note: Yesterday, this observer, along with British surgeon Dr. Swee Ang Chai and Nurse Marion Looi Pok, true global medical heroines during and following the 1982 Massacre at Sabra-Shatila had the honor to pass the afternoon with our longtime friend, Dr. Bayan al Hout whose husband Shafiq, one of the most respected and loved founders of the Palestine Liberation Organization passed away quite suddenly on August 2, 2009.

Her now classic volume, "Sabra and Shatila: September 1982" by Bayan Nuwayhed Al-Hout, 2004, available from Pluto Press, London, is highly recommended by the Sabra Shatila Foundation for those who seek a deeper understanding of the exact sequence of events during and surrounding the Massacre.

Ramadan asserts Muslim attachment to Jerusalem

September 17th, 2009

From Khalid Amayreh in Jerusalem

As the month of Ramadan draws to a close, many Palestinians are devoting the last ten days of the holy month to gaining more spiritual enrichment through I’tikaf or uninterrupted spiritual engagement.

Many people are going for I’tikaf this year, motivated by a desire to gain Allah’s blessing and also encouraged by a relative relaxation of the normally harsh Israeli restrictions on the entry of Palestinians to al-Quds. The Israeli occupation authorities this year allowed men over 50 and women over 45 to enter Jerusalem on Fridays. However, worshipers are still subjected to meticulous and often humiliating searches.

This Constitution Day Try Something New: Ignore the Feds!

September 17th, 2009

by Michael Boldin

There's plenty of federal holidays for Americans to celebrate. On July 4th, there's independence from King George's England. On the first Monday in September, a holiday was dedicated to the "social and economic achievements of American workers." Other days throughout the year celebrate autumn harvest, soldiers who died in the civil war and even a person who sailed to this continent nearly three centuries before the country was "founded."

When there's no federally-sanctioned holiday to call upon, protesters and activists across the political spectrum often pick "important" dates to schedule events to bring attention to their cause. We've seen protests on Tax Day, Independence Day, May Day, Earth Day, and more. And, just last week, we saw great importance placed on a day that doesn't even have a letter in its name, 9/12.

NEW HUBBLE VERIFIES UNIVERSAL URGE TO UNITE

September 16th, 2009

Allen L Roland

The new Hubble Telescope captures the universal urge to unite which exists not only in the unseen quantum subatomic world but also in the physical world of planets and Galaxies. We cannot escape our destiny and it is divine:

The new Hubble Wide Field Camera 3 captured this still life of Stephan's Quintet, a group of five galaxies. (It's also known as Hickson Compact Group 92.) At the top right is NGC 7319, a barred spiral, and those blue and red specks are clusters of thousands of stars.

At the center are two galaxies that appear from this perspective almost as one, where there's "a frenzy of star birth" going on. (For the record, they're NGC 7318A and NGC 7318B.) At bottom left is NGC 7317, which NASA describes as "a normal-looking elliptical galaxy."

This photo verifies the Universal urge to unite, which is the principal property of my Unified Field , as well as Teilhard de Chardin's Law of Complexity Consciousness.

The World Seed Conference: Good for Farmers?

September 16th, 2009

by Share the World's Resources

Last week marked a little-known and under-reported symposium held in Rome under the auspices of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation – the World Seed Conference. Although the subject may appear obscure, the conference theme and the issues discussed, including plant variety protection and seed improvement techniques, could not be more important to millions of farmers in the developing world.

Between the heavy acronyms and technical terms used by the UN figures, government officials and industry representatives, the conference illustrated two clear themes; firstly, the desire of Northern-based business to continue a process of enclosure of key farming inputs such as seeds by way of technology. Secondly, a push by these same companies (supported by the US and EU countries) for an extension and tightening of intellectual property rights on plant genetic resources into the national law of poorer countries.

Glenn Beck's Demagoguery, Right Wing Extremism, and Racism

September 16th, 2009

by Stephen Lendman

At a time of 24-hour news and a proliferation of television and radio talk shows featuring hatemongers and demagogues like Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity and Lou Dobbs, Glenn Beck may stand out as the most unhinged and extremist of all as evidenced by his jihad against anyone to the left of his views, disadvantaged minorities, Muslims, Latino immigrants, and progressive change in some of his most outlandish comments, including:

-- calling Barack Obama a "racist (who) has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture; I don't know what it is....This guy is, I believe, a racist;"

-- calling Van Jones "an avowed, radical, revolutionary communist," then saying "Jones is the tip of the iceberg" as part of his over-the-top campaign against anyone less extremist than himself;

How low will Israel stoop to win the propaganda war?

September 16th, 2009

Stuart Littlewood

‘The Israel Project', a US media advocacy group, has produced a revised training manual to help the worldwide Zionist movement win the propaganda war, keep their ill-gotten territorial gains and persuade international audiences to accept that their crimes are necessary and conform to “shared values” between Israel and the civilised West.

It’s a clever document

The manual teaches how to justify the slaughter, the ethnic cleansing, the land-grabbing, the cruelty and the blatant disregard for international law and UN resolutions, and make it all smell sweeter with a liberal squirt of the aerosol of persuasive language. It is designed to hoodwink us ignorant and gullible Americans and Europeans into believing that we actually share values with the racist regime in Israel and that its abominable behaviour is therefore deserving of our support.
