Energy crisis: a time bomb about to go nuclear

Roland Michel Tremblay

One of the main reasons for wars right now in this world is energy related, natural resources, oil, natural gas and pipelines. There are two critical reasons why we have to solve the energy crisis, and both reasons lead to the absolute annihilation of the human race. There will be more pollution as we consume ever more energy, hurrying global warming and our extinction, and as resources become more scarce, wars will continue to erupt everywhere in the last battle to secure the so-called remaining liter of “juice” on Earth. How can we avoid total destruction by solving our energy crisis?

Bullying tactics of corporate hierarchies breed insanity

Roland Michel Tremblay

So many things, are just fake and faking it, just like life. You might think this article will be my least significant one, I feel it is my most significant one. Because it touches to our daily life, everything with do, everything we are. It defines one’s existence from the beginning to the end, if there is such a thing in sight. What are we all about? What is it that we do, that we are? A job. How are we treated in that job? Very badly indeed. Like children, like prisoners, like animals. Well, we will have to put a stop to this corporate bullying.

CNN's Matthew Chance interviewed Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Thursday.

Matthew Chance: Many people around the world, even though you're not the president of Russia anymore, see you as the main decision maker in this country. Wasn't you that ordered Russian forces into Georgia and you who should take responsibility for the consequences?

Vladimir Putin: Of course, that's not the case. In accordance with the Constitution of the Russian Federation, the issues of foreign policy and defense are fully in the hands of the president. The president of the Russian Federation was acting within his powers.

Israeli PR fails the “decent, honest and truthful” test

Stuart Littlewood shows how Israeli public relations fodder pumped out in London and Tel Aviv fails a crucial PR test. He argues that, if the Palestinians and other Arab were to get their media act together, they could “make mincemeat” of Israeli propaganda.

When Ron Prosor arrived in London last year to take up his post as Israeli ambassador he was eager to step up public relations. He told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz: "I'm not afraid to appear anywhere, and there is no platform ... that I will not utilize for PR work."

WHY I HAD TO RECOGNISE GEORGIA’S BREAKAWAY REGIONS

Dmitry Medvedev

Information Clearing House / Financial Times

On Tuesday Russia recognised the independence of the territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. It was not a step taken lightly, or without full consideration of the consequences. But all possible outcomes had to be weighed against a sober understanding of the situation - the histories of the Abkhaz and Ossetian peoples, their freely expressed desire for independence, the tragic events of the past weeks and international precedents for such a move.

Not all of the world’s nations have their own statehood. Many exist happily within boundaries shared with other nations. The Russian Federation is an example of largely harmonious coexistence by many dozens of nations and nationalities. But some nations find it impossible to live under the tutelage of another. Relations between nations living “under one roof” need to be handled with the utmost sensitivity.

Their investigation, says the FBI, was based upon the never questioned assumption that the said flights had been hijacked.

The Financial Times and the “Self-Confessed Mastermind of 9/11”

James Petras

Axis of Logic

In recent days there is mounting evidence of the advance of totalitarianism in the political and media mainstream. The entire Western world, led by the United States, has embraced a Georgian regime, which invaded South Ossetia totally demolishing its capital city of 50,000 residents, assassinated 1500 men, women and children and dozens of Russian peace keepers. The US has mobilized a naval and air armada off the Iranian coast, prepared to annihilate a country of 70 million people. The New York Times published an essay by a prominent Israeli historian, which advocates the nuclear incineration of Iran. All the major mass media have mounted a systematic propaganda campaign against China, supporting each and every terrorist and separatist group, and whipping up public opinion in favor of launching a New Cold War. There is little doubt that this new wave of imperial aggression and bellicose rhetoric is meant to deflect domestic discontent and distract public opinion from the deepening economic crises.

My Dear Fellow Americans: They will spit on your grave

Craig J. Cantoni

Yannone

An old adage says that if you find yourself in a hole, quit digging. So, my question for you, my fellow Americans, is why do you continue digging, and, worse, why are you thinking of electing another steam shovel to the presidency?

What are you digging? You're digging not only the nation's financial grave but also your own. That's not hyperbole. Historians are already chiseling a tombstone with this epitaph: Buried Here Is a Nation that Spent Itself to Death.

If you don't think the nation is spending itself to death, then you don't know the facts. That's understandable, given that it's not in the interest of K-12 schools, colleges, politicians, the financial industry, and the media to give you the facts.

Oh, No! Not Joe Biden!

William Hughes

“The next six months are going to tell the story.” - Sen. Joe Biden pontificating on the illegal Iraq War on 12/18/05.

The Democratic Party has a death wish! There is no other rational explanation for hapless Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) ending up as Sen. Barack Obama’s VP running mate. For starters, the presidential election is about getting a majority of the electoral votes. Delaware “only” has three electoral votes! And, Biden isn’t a sure thing to carry even them for Obama. He’s a motor mouth, who has traditionally done a lot of talking before putting his brain in gear. If the Democrats were serious about winning the 2008 election and about representing the “politics of hope,” they could have picked Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) for the VP slot. She is a gutsy progressive, a fierce opponent of the Iraq War, and comes from a state, California, which has 55 electoral votes to boot. But, significant change and real hope aren’t on the Democrats’ agenda.

Under-estimating the intelligence of the American people, the NIST persists in papering over the endless holes in Bush's official conspiracy theories of 911. Openly declaring that its new 'report' will finish off critics of Bush's official conspiracy theory of 911, NIST has presumed to repeal laws of physics --the laws of entropy as well as the First & the Second Laws of Thermodynamics. A frown spread on his lips.

It's time I came to grips!

The power of the Israel Lobby is an important component of keeping Americans in the dark. Recently I watched a documentary that demonstrates the control that the Israel Lobby exercises over Americans’ view of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The documentary is available HERE.

John McCain In A 'Nutshell' - Philanderer, War Pimp, Bush Policy Clone, and Neocon Liar...

Back in April 2007, I wrote a zinger about the foolish maverick John McCain after he returned from his triumphant walkabout on the brutal streets of Baghdad. Johnny Boy headed straight for the public airways, where he smirkingly gushed that the streets of Iraq are now 'safe.' The foolish war pimp tried to sell the lie that everything was cozy and secure, even as he strutted around wearing his bulletproof vest, surrounded by a heavily armed military entourage buzzing in air and on the ground all around him. Indeed, according to McCain, Baghdad was safe then, and it’s even safer today.

911 Commission co-chairs claim that they were misled, perhaps deliberately, by the Bush administration and Pentagon brass. Because 911 was an act of mass murder overtly covered up by the Bush administration, the many lies told amount to more than mere obstructions of justice or cover ups. They amount to high treason, a betrayal of the public trust, a mechanism by which this administration seized power unconstitutionally. McCain has made clear he would continue and even escalate George W. Bush’s open-ended global war on Islamic radicals. McCain buys into the neoconservative vision of expending U.S. treasure and troops to kill as many Muslim militants as possible.

Georgia: A Blow to U.S. Energy

Steve LeVine

The Baku-Ceyhan was the Caspian's first independent pipeline (J. Nicholl/Polaris)

BusinessWeek

The sudden war in the Caucasus brought Georgia to heel, reasserted Russia's claim as the dominant force in the region, and dealt a blow to U.S. prestige. But in this part of the world, diplomacy and war are about oil and gas as much as they are about hegemony and the tragic loss of human life. Victory in Georgia now gives Russia the edge in the struggle over access to the Caspian's 35 billion barrels of oil and trillions of cubic feet of gas. The probable losers: the U.S. and those Western oil companies that have bet heavily on the Caspian as one of the few regions where they could still operate with relative freedom.

GLOBAL TEMPERATURE TRENDS FROM 2500 B.C. TO 2008 A.D.

Cliff Harris

Until recently, global temperatures were more than a degree Fahrenheit warmer when compared to the overall 20th Century mean. From August of 2007 through February of 2008, the Earth’s mean reading dropped to near the 200-year average temperature of 57 degrees. (Enlarge Long-Term Chart Above.)

We, Cliff Harris and Randy Mann, believe that the warming and even the cooling of global temperatures are the result of long-term climatic cycles, solar activity, sea-surface temperature patterns and more. However, Mankind’s activities of the burning of fossil fuels, massive deforestations, the replacing of grassy surfaces with asphalt and concrete, the ‘Urban Heat Island Effect,’ are making conditions ‘worse’ and this will ultimately enhance the Earth’s warming process down the meteorological roadway in the next several decades.

So do all tyrants read off the same page or what?

In an effort to "placate the West," the Chinese government famously sponsored "protest zones" while hosting the Olympics. Perhaps it took a lesson from George Bush’s "free speech zones" or an earlier version of the charade: in 1988, Atlanta, Georgia confined dissidents to what one described as a "free-speech cage" during the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) convention. The device proved so useful that the DNC has relied on it since, with the Republican National Committee (RNC) quickly following suit. And heck, we haven’t even gotten an Olympics out of it.

The ChiComs went America’s rulers one better: they required would-be protestors to register for the zones. I’m reminded of an old Gary Larson cartoon, in which a dog lurks around the corner from a clothes dryer. On its open door he’s written "cat fud," with an arrow pointing to the machine’s interior. A cat stands aquiver before it, wondering whether there’s really food inside, while the watching dog thinks, "Oh, please, oh, please…"

The 9-11 Passenger List Oddity

Vincent Sammartino

As everyone who is involved in exposing the 9-11 cover-up knows, nothing concerning 9-11 is as it seems. Whether it's the magic jet that our government told us crashed into the Pentagon, the obvious missing jet at Shanksville (Flight 93), the three perfect demolitions of the World Trade Center towers, or the fact that Arab hijackers are still alive and their supposed ring leader Osama bin Laden has the ability to change his facial features at will. Nothing, I repeat, nothing about the government/controlled media version of 9-11 makes any sense.

The Free Gaza Movement, the organizer of the bold mission, includes people from various religious and cultural backgrounds who are united in their dedication to the cause of freedom for the estimated 1.5 million Gazans, thoroughly tormented by a nearly hermetic blockade that has effectively reduced the originally impoverished enclave to a virtual concentration camp.

Disproof of Global Warming Hype Published

R. F. Gay / F. William Engdahl

A mathematical proof that there is no “climate crisis” has been published in debate on global warming in Physics and Society, a scientific publication of the 46,000-strong American Physical Society.

Christopher Monckton, who once advised Margaret Thatcher, demonstrates via 30 equations that computer models used by the UN’s climate panel (IPCC) were pre-programmed with overstated values for the three variables whose product is “climate sensitivity” (temperature increase in response to greenhouse-gas increase), resulting in a 500-2000% overstatement of CO2’s effect on temperature in the IPCC’s latest climate assessment report, published in 2007.

TWILIGHT OF THE PSYCHOPATHS

Dr. Kevin Barrett

The Canadian

“Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives. I think we're being run by maniacs for maniacal ends and I think I'm liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That's what's insane about it.” ~John Lennon, before his murder by CIA mind-control subject Mark David Chapman.

When Gandhi was asked his opinion of Western civilization he said it would be a good idea. But that oft-cited quote, is misleading, assuming as it does that civilization is an unmitigated blessing.

Civilized people, we are told, live peacefully and cooperatively with their fellows, sharing the necessary labour in order to obtain the leisure to develop arts and sciences. And while that would be a good idea, it is not a good description of what has been going on in the so-called advanced cultures during the past 8,000 years.

The Puppet Masters Behind Georgia President Saakashvili

F. William Engdahl

Illustration: Spica Stolfus

The controversy over the Georgian surprise military attacks on South Ossetia and Abkhazia on 8.8.08 makes a closer look at the controversial Georgian President and his puppet masters important. An examination shows 41 year old Mikhail Saakashvili to be a ruthless and corrupt totalitarian who is tied to not only the US NATO establishment, but also to the Israeli military and intelligence establishment. The famous ‘Rose Revolution of November 2003 that forced the ageing Edouard Shevardnadze from power and swept the then 36 year old US university graduate into power was run and financed by the US State Department, the Soros Foundations, and agencies tied to the Pentagon and US intelligence community.

Mihkail Saakashvili was deliberately placed in power in one of the most sophisticated US regime change operations, using ostensibly private NGOs (Non Governmental Organizations) to create an atmosphere of popular protest against the existing regime of former Soviet Foreign Minister Edouard Shevardnadze, who was no longer useful to Washington when he began to make a deal with Moscow over energy pipelines and privatizations.

Israeli investigation of assault on Palestinian journalist Mohammed Omer a whitewash

Stuart Littlewood

At last, an explanation (of sorts) for the assault on Palestinian journalist Mohammed Omer by Israeli security officials has finally landed on my doormat. -It comes in the form of a letter from the Israeli Embassy in London to my MP, and refers to the “security check” Mr Omer was put through when he arrived at the Allenby Bridge crossing on 26 June 2008 on his way home to Gaza after receiving the coveted Martha Gellhorn prize for journalism at a ceremony in London.

Mr Omer’s allegations "were of grave concern to the government of Israel", says the letter, and an "immediate" investigation was launched which highlighted a number of discrepancies between his testimony and the records of those alleged to have mistreated him.

(Rome) The old adage according to which time is the great equalizer holds sway in a special way in contemporary totalitarian America. Unlike the old-horse-beaten-until-it-drops-dead knows it is being beaten, our people are beaten in such a horrendously clinical manner that they do not even realize they are being beaten. Though aware of their mortality, gently beaten human beings however have come to resemble the whipped horse in that they do not seem to realize they are dying from the blows. The problem is there is little or no public opinion. And that collective memory is dead.

Legal opinions permitting the U.S. to torture prisoners and authorize their transfer out of Iraq were respectively accepted or written by Harvard law professor Jack Goldsmith while he headed the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel(OLC).

In that capacity, Goldsmith drafted a memo on March 19, 2003, that was a green light for the transfer of up to a dozen prisoners from Iraq to CIA prisons where they were tortured, writes Lawrence Velvel, dean of the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover. Velvel makes his comments in a thorough critique - - giving both pros and cons - - of Goldsmith’s self protecting book entitled “The Terror Presidency,” a book in which Goldsmith seeks to make himself look good in order to evade the criticism he deserves.

A Brief History of Russia and the West

Richard K. Moore

Scene during the Russo-Japanese war: Russian soldiers in Manchuria.

Background

Everyone, since geopolitics was invented, has always known that Eurasia is the key to global supremacy. For that reason, Russia has been under attack by the West every time the West could get it together to launch an attack. Napolean had his try, and the Germans had a go in World War I, having been manipulated in the context of Britain's balance of powers strategy. Then in World War II the Germans attacked again, having been re-armed by Western financiers. A strong, healthy Russia, even if geopolitically benign, is an obstacle to any power who seeks hegemony in global affairs.

Big Three Block Iran Attack

William O. Beeman

Foreign Policy In Focus

The United States is in a huge foreign policy muddle in the Middle East. It wants to dominate and control Iran but requires the support of the world community to accomplish its aims. Diplomacy and sanctions require only a low level of support. On the other hand, to launch a military attack or green-light one by Israel, the United States needs far more backing.

This support does not appear to exist, and recent U.S. foreign policy actions are eroding that support even further. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on August 13 that the United States refused to give the go-ahead to Israeli attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities in talks between Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak. Could it be that the Bush administration finally knows when it is licked?

When do we stop sitting shiva for the Holocaust?

Any Palestinian who suffers abuse and humiliation at the hands of Israeli soldiers at the checkpoints, is being punished for our unresolved anger at G-d. Each time a home in Gaza is bulldozed or an undetected cluster bomb rips the limbs from a Lebanese child, innocent human beings are being victimized by our self-righteous, unexamined rage.

I marched and lobbied in DC last June to call for an end to forty years of Israeli occupation and the US policies that support it. The sign I carried posed a single question. It is one that urgently begs to be addressed, debated and answered. I believe it holds significant implications, not only for Jews, but for the entire Middle East. Its purpose may have been to prepare for a naval blockade of Iran. Initial reports after its completion were that participating ships were deployed to Persian Gulf and Arabian and Red Sea locations to join up with the present American strike force in the region. The major media cover none of this, and US Navy sources deny it. So precise information is unclear. From what's known, however, redeployment may be planned, and a blockade may ensue. FAREWELL MAHMOUD DARWISH

Sinan Antoon

Al-Ahram Weekly / URUKNET

Very few poets become the voice of their nation and even fewer succeed in transcending that to become much more. Mahmoud Darwish (1941-2008) was that rare bird who crossed many skies and horizons. His death last week, following complications from open-heart surgery in Houston, Texas, ended an epic life and interrupted a stunningly creative and prolific output, especially in his later years. It is difficult to underestimate Darwish's symbolic capital and his cultural and political significance. With his departure Palestine loses one of its most precious cultural icons, a poetic voice of universal echoes. The larger Arab world and its diaspora bid farewell to one of its best modern poets and the most popular and successful one in the last three decades. His poems were set to music, discussed in the Israeli Knesset, and his recitals could fill sport stadiums. Darwish's absence will further enhance his near-mythical status in the collective memory of Palestinians and Arabs.

In January 2007, Hugo Chavez announced his "Bolivarian Socialism" project for the 21st century and explained its dependence on five revolutionary "motors:"

-- redefining and changing the organs of state power;

Lost when they came home

While the Bush administration is busy once again antagonizing Superpower Russia and inciting Georgia’s attack on South Ossetia, let us turn to some of the administration’s less flashy claims to fame: the shocking suicide rates of soldiers returning from Iraq, more than twice the number of US civilian suicides. The figure in 2005 alone ran at the rate of 120 suicides a week, according to CBS News, which described this tragedy as a Suicide Epidemic Among veterans.

Large picture lost

Khaled Amayreh in Ramallah

An activist dragged by Israeli soldiers during a scuffle between Palestinian and international
activists and Israeli army at a protest against the construction of Israel's controversial
apartheid wall in the West Bank village of Nilin near Ramallah.

With Fatah clamping down hard on Hamas in the West Bank, Palestinian unity is the clearest victim.

Despite largely facetious denials, the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority (PA) has been carrying out a vindictive campaign against Hamas sympathisers and supporters. According to various sources, hundreds of school teachers, college students, journalists, and other professionals as well as ordinary citizens have been arrested and imprisoned on largely amorphous charges such as "constituting a threat to state security" -- when the PA is neither a state nor a sovereign entity -- and "violating the rule of law".

Mazin Qumsiyeh -A Palestinian Life

Wheels of Justice

Mazin Qumsiyeh, a Palestinian American who helps
coordinate the group Wheels of Justice, speaking at
Andover High School.

After such knowledge; what forgiveness?
Think now
History has many cunning passages,
Contrived corridors
And issue, deceives with wispering ambitions
Guides us by vanities.
Think now
She gives when our attention is distracted
And what she gives, she gives with such supple confusion
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time
T. S. Elliot

I graduated from Jordan University with a Bachelor degree at age 21 and then taught in Palestinian Schools (Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho). In those year and a half as a middle and high school teacher (Jan 78-June 79) I worked very hard at two jobs (extra teaching at private school in Jerusalem) so as to save money for higher education. I saved enough for the airline tickets and an extra $1500 for the first few months in America. I came to the US in August 1979 to pursue higher education and ended up making it a home while maintaining a home in Palestine.

The two-faced, underhanded foreign policy of Georgia

Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey

Ask anyone in the Caucasus region, and they will tell you never to trust a Georgian because they would shake your hand with a smile and then stab you in the back. On Friday morning, we saw a perfect example of this treachery, when hours after declaring a ceasefire, Georgian military units launched a savage attack on the civilians of South Ossetia.

Hours after Georgia President Mikhail Saakashvili, the pro-western Washington-backed anti-democratic stooge (attacks on opposition policians in Georgia are rife) declared a unilateral ceasefire, the Georgian army lanched a savage attack on the capital of the province of South Ossetia, Tskhinvali, with tanks and infantry, while the air force bombed a village and strafed a Russian humanitarian aid convoy.

Using Georgia to Target Russia

Stephen Lendman

"Russia accused Georgia of killing more than 2000 people, mostly civilians,
in South Ossetia."

After the Soviet Union's 1991 dissolution, Georgia's South Ossetia province broke away and declared its independence. So far it remains undiplomatically recognized by UN member states. It's been traditionally allied with Russia and wishes to reunite with Northern Ossetes in the North Ossetia-Alania Russian republic. Nothing so far is in prospect, but Russia appears receptive to the idea. And for Abkhazia as well, Georgia's other breakaway province. The conflict also has implications for Transdniestria, the small independent Russian-majority part of Moldova bordering Ukraine, and for Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan.

Double standards and cowardice still guide Western diplomacy

far from Tskhinvali, in the Georgian breakaway South Ossetia

Redress

Stuart Littlewood contrasts the West’s condemnation of Russia’s intervention in Georgia with its silence over Israeli breaches of international law and crimes against humanity.

While the fragile “freedom” boats and their courageous volunteer crews steer a course for Palestinian territorial waters in an effort to break Israel’s illegal siege of the Gaza Strip, our Western leaders are once again tripping over their double standards. "X has invaded a sovereign neighbouring state and threatens a democratic government elected by its people,” lectures Bush. “Such an action is unacceptable in the 21st century. Ali Abunimah

11 August. (Gali Tibbon/AFP/Getty Images)

Electronic Intifada

From the moment Georgia launched a surprise attack on the tiny breakaway region of South Ossetia last week, prompting a fierce Russian counterattack, Israel has been trying to distance itself from the conflict. This is understandable: with Georgian forces on the retreat, large numbers of civilians killed and injured, and Russia's fury unabated, Israel's deep involvement is severely embarrassing.

The collapse of the Georgian offensive represents not only a disaster for that country and its US-backed leaders, but another blow to the myth of Israel's military prestige and prowess. Worse, Israel fears that Russia could retaliate by stepping up its military assistance to Israel's adversaries including Iran.

The real meaning of the South Ossetian war: Russia strikes back

The Saker

Vineyard of the Saker

The amazing and tragic events in South Ossetia seem to baffle most Western experts. While a majority of them fall back on the 'safe' position of blaming Russia for everything others, in particularly on the Left, appear to be rather unsure of what to think of all this; many basically ignore the issue altogether. In contrast to the Leftist blogosphere or to the free and independent press, the corporate media immediately understood that this was, yet again, a perfect opportunity to prove to its political and corporate masters what a loyal propaganda tool it is. While CNN basically used an 24/7 'open mike' policy towards Saakashvili, the rest of the US and European media uniformly bought into the US propaganda on the causes and effects of this conflict. This purely ideological approach to the unfolding crisis ended up blinding almost everyone to the real nature of what is going on.

Bush's War in Georgia

“I saw bodies lying on the streets, around ruined buildings and in cars. It’s impossible to count them now. There's hardly a single building left undamaged.” Lyudmila Ostayeva, resident of Tskhinvali, South Ossetia

Washington's bloody fingerprints are all over the invasion of South Ossetia. Georgia President Mikhail Saakashvili would never dream of launching a massive military attack unless he got explicit orders from his bosses at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. After all, Saakashvili owes his entire political career to American power-brokers and US intelligence agencies. If he disobeyed them, he'd be gone in a fortnight. Besides an operation like this takes months of planning and logistical support; especially if it's perfectly timed to coincide with the beginning of the Olympic games. (another petty neocon touch) That means Pentagon planners must have been working hand in hand with Georgian generals for months in advance. Nothing was left to chance.

Bolivia has certainly changed. In La Paz, I attended a large reception given by the Cuban ambassador. Mojitos, buffet, dances... Where was it held? In the ceremonial hall of... the Bolivian army. Yes, the one that killed Ché.

Bolivia has certainly changed, but not everyone wishes it well. We had come to get an idea first hand with some progressive intellectuals from about 15 countries. Frei Betto, Ernesto Cardenal, Ramsey Clark, François Houtart, Luis Britto Garcia, Pascual Serrano... A few days of meetings and exchanges with Bolivian intellectuals, representatives of the Indian communities, artists...

It's a sensitive moment. The rightwing is trying to split away the wealthy regions of the country's East. To frustrate this operation, President Evo Morales, in the middle of his mandate, has called for a revocatory referendum, this Aug. 10. It's a sort of vote of confidence. It puts his legitimacy in play, but also that of the prefects of departments, including those who belong to his opposition. FEMA CONCENTRATION CAMPS: LOCATIONS AND EXECUTIVE ORDERS

There over 800 prison camps in the United States, all fully operational and ready to receive prisoners. They are all staffed and even surrounded by full-time guards, but they are all empty. These camps are to be operated by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) should Martial Law need to be implemented in the United States and all it would take is a presidential signature on a proclamation and the attorney general's signature on a warrant to which a list of names is attached. Ask yourself if you really want to be on Ashcroft's list. The Rex 84 Program was established on the reasoning that if a "mass exodus" of illegal aliens crossed the Mexican/US border, they would be quickly rounded up and detained in detention centers by FEMA. Rex 84 allowed many military bases to be closed down and to be turned into prisons.

“History is indeed little more than the register of the crimes, follies and misfortunes of mankind.” - Edward Gibbon, author of “The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.”

It is rare when I agree with an editorial in Rupert Murdock’s rag--the “New York Post.” But, on Aug. 9, 2008, the tabloid got it right when it ranted about John Edwards’ extramarital affair, while running, in 2006, for president in the Democracy Party primaries. The “Post” roared about the fallen political star: “His entire presidential campaign was based on hypocrisy and deception. Indeed, nearly every word out of the former trial lawyer’s mouth dripped with insincerity and faleshood...Edwards’ campaign...[has] essentially been one big con. The 'Security Vacuum' in Jerusalem

Nicola Nasser

Jerusalem, the casus belli of the Palestinian national struggle of liberation and the rallying cry of the Zionist movement for the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine, was recently described as becoming "a terror hub," a "hotbed" of violent Palestinian neighborhoods and as being "encircled" by "a security vacuum," where going into the Palestinian refugee camp of Shuafat "is more dangerous than the (northern West Bank) Jenin refugee camp," according to the Israeli former "defense" minister who now holds the transport portfolio, Shaul Mofaz, and the director of Israel's internal security agency "Shin Bet," Yuval Diskin, respectively.

Parochialism is now driving the Palestinian scene. The latest confrontation between Hamas and Fatah in the Gaza Strip has deepened the chasm separating the two largest Palestinian political movements.

The "Battle of Shijaiyeh" raged for 48 hours in the eastern suburbs of Gaza City, leaving 11 people dead and 110 injured. Several buildings and homes were completely destroyed. Dozens of Fatah activists, including some allegedly responsible for the Gaza beach bombing of 25 July which killed six people, among them a six-year-old girl, were arrested.

To frame my comments, you need to know that I am a social worker. Various jobs have introduced me to disabled children, women receiving welfare, and homeless people. I have made eye contact with people who have had to make a choice between eating and taking their medications. Can you imagine that choice? In the richest nation of the world? What’s the right answer when your question is should I use my limited resources for food, or for the medication that helps me manage my diabetes, or my mental illness? What I have to say tonight is very personal for me…

Zionism versus democracy

Frank Scott

They can write a paper stating what they are going to do, get caught spying on the US
through AIPAC, their largest lobbying group, the get caught feeding fabricated information
about Iraq through the OSP to the government, which was used as pretext to go to war and
still, if anyone points at the elephant in the room, the foreign spy ring in the US, they are
called ‘anti-Semitic’. Well, it is not anti-Semitic to tell the truth. Zionists hijacked our govern-
ment and lied us into war. [anti-neocons.com]

Online Journal

“The Zionist power configuration’s primary loyalty is to the state of Israel and its policy is designed to colonize the US congress on behalf and to the benefit of the ‘mother country,’ Israel” --James Petras

James Petras speaks to a reality rarely discussed in circles accustomed to whispered criticism, at best, of the U.S. performance in support of Israel. He mentions Congress, but the executive branch has been equally “colonized.” The scripted performances by major party presidential candidates, whether bowing before the Israel -- American lobby in Washington or praying before the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, are evidence enough. The dominance exercised by what he calls the Zionist Power Configuration is a very critical problem for a public that remains generally oblivious to its existence, let alone the control it has over our political system.

ISRAEL CONTINUES TO EXPLOIT GAZA RESOURCES

Valentina Azarov

In violation of international law, the Israeli High Court gave permission to multi-
national companies to exploit resources off the Gaza Coast for the benefit of Israelis.

URUKNET / Alternative Information Center

Many are unaware that in addition to the hearing on Israel’s supply of gas/electricity to the Gaza Strip, HCJ 9132/07 Jaber Albasyouni Ahmed and others v The Government of Israel[1] , the Israeli High Court of Justice (HCJ) also heard a petition dealing with the supply of energy in the opposite direction – from the Gaza Strip to Israel.

In the latter case of HCJ 5547/07 Noble Energy Mediterranean v The Government of Israel[2], a number of multinational companies were fighting over the right to exploit natural gas resources located in the seabed off the Gazan coast; gas which would provide for the demands of the Israeli market. The judgment, handed down by the Israeli HCJ on 25 December 2007, was virtually unknown among activists and organizations alike, who were focusing at the time on the High Court petition concerning the decrease in the supply of gas and electricity to the Gaza Strip by Israel.

As the Fighting Swells in Afghanistan, So Does a Refugee Camp in Its Capital

Carlotta Gall

An Afghan boy from Helmand Province carried water back to his family’s tent at a refugee camp on

URUKNET / New York Times

KABUL, Afghanistan — On a piece of barren land on the western edge of this capital, a refugee camp is steadily swelling as families displaced by the heavy bombardment in southern Afghanistan arrive in batches.

The growing numbers reaching Kabul are a sign of the deepening of the conflict between NATO and American forces and the Taliban in the south and of the feeling among the population that there will be no end soon. Families who fled the fighting around their homes in Helmand Province one or two years ago and sought temporary shelter around two southern provincial capitals, Lashkar Gah and Kandahar, said they had moved to Kabul because of growing insecurity across the south.

Solzhenitsyn breaks last taboo of the revolution

Solzhenitsyn in a Soviet gulag, 1953.

The Guardian

This was written in January, 2003 [Ed.]

Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who first exposed the horrors of the Stalinist gulag, is now attempting to tackle one of the most sensitive topics of his writing career - the role of the Jews in the Bolshevik revolution and Soviet purges.

In his latest book Solzhenitsyn, 84, deals with one of the last taboos of the communist revolution: that Jews were as much perpetrators of the repression as its victims. Two Hundred Years Together - a reference to the 1772 partial annexation of Poland and Russia which greatly increased the Russian Jewish population - contains three chapters discussing the Jewish role in the revolutionary genocide and secret police purges of Soviet Russia.

Sanctions and an economic embargo were imposed, and the democratically elected government was falsely called a terrorist organization and isolated. Stepped up repression followed along with repeated IDF incursions, attacks, killings, targeted assassinations, arrests, destruction of property and more in a pattern all too familiar to Palestinians for over six decades. Gazans are imprisoned in their own land and have been traumatized for months. In June 2007, things got worse after Israel placed the Territory under siege - described by some as medieval because of its extreme harshness.

It's clear from reading the daily news that the police in this country have become as big a menace to the average American as any officially designated "criminal" could ever be. Officially designated criminals at least are restrained by fear of discovery and try to make their behavior as inconspicuous as possible whereas the police have no such fear because they are "the law." They feel no compunction against using all manner of force, including sexual assault and murder, at any place and at any time in this supposedly free land of ours. It is high time to reconsider the very necessity of the modern police force, which is actually based on the system of "law enforcement" wielded by the tyrannical Kings of England to enforce their evil decrees on the people, and not on the system that prevailed in early America in which the people of the town themselves hired the Sheriff whose job it was to protect them, and not to enforce governmental decrees upon them.

As I have stated, the martial arts is not only about personal protection concerning possible physical altercations. For me that is a secondary consideration and is generally handled without contact. The acquisition of defense techniques also brings an increased harmony to our various bodies. It brings greater mental and emotional balance. It brings physical conditioning. It brings a new vibrational aura. It brings heightened awareness of one’s environment and place in it. It improves the state of one’s health and it reshapes the kind and quality of the circumstances that we encounter by changing who we are in the mix.

The study pulls the rug from under John McCain who had promised not just more of the same old horse dung but perhaps another one hundred, another '10,000 years' of war against Iraq!

The Mother of All Paradoxes: The American Social Model

Gaither Stewart

Fourth of July display of “patriotism” by the American Legion. For most Americans,
the defense of “Americanism” is indistinguishable from the defense of capitalism, aka
“the free enterprise system”—its favorite euphemism. Only in America can a citizen
opposed to capitalism be denounced as “un-American.”

From Tom Paine's Corner

The dismal demise of the American Dream (if it ever really existed), the dream not of what we believe it was but of what we wanted to believe it was.

“It seems to me that the nature of the ultimate revolution with which we are now faced is precisely this: That we are in process of developing a whole series of techniques which will enable the controlling oligarchy who have always existed and presumably will always exist to get people to love their servitude.” (Aldous Huxley in a 1962 speech at Berkeley)

I think Lord Buckley said something like that in his rap about “The King of the Bad Cats.” He was talking about reincarnation. Of course we reincarnate every morning when we wake up from sleep. For most people waking up is waking up into a dream. A very few people are fully awake. The rest of us are somewhere between passed out and intermittent flashes of light. It would be a much different world if we were more awake.

The Heyoka -Living Life Backwards

Todd F. Eklof

Illustration: David Michael Kennedy

“Why did it all turn out for me like this?” George asks, after an afternoon of self-reflection at the beach. “I had so much promise. I was personable, I was bright. Oh, maybe not academically speaking, but ... I was perceptive. I always know when someone's uncomfortable at a party. It all became very clear to me sitting out there today, that every decision I've ever made, in my entire life, has been wrong. My life is the complete opposite of everything I want it to be. Every instinct I have, in every aspect of life, be it something to wear, something to eat ... It's all been wrong.” Just then a waitress arrives to take his order.

Ni'ilin in the the West Bank

Donald Macintyre

URUKNET / The Independent

Focus of unarmed demonstrations and civil disobedience

Mariam Moussa appeared almost catatonic in her grief yesterday, seated immobilised on a sofa, her eyes fixed on the "martyr" poster she was clutching of her ten year old son, killed by an Israeli bullet the previous evening. "Since she heard the news she didn't say anything and she didn't eat or drink anything" said Isma Amireh, 36, a family friend.

MOHAMMED OMER ~~ IN HIS OWN WORDS

Mohammed Omer

Desert Peace

Mohammed Omer, ‘the voice for the voiceless’ people of Gaza speaks again… this time to The Nation. Read of his ordeal in his own words.

The might of the Israeli military will not silence my pen or darken my camera lens. Truth and Consequences Under the Israeli Occupation.

I am a Palestinian journalist from Gaza. At the age of 17, I armed myself with a camera and a pen, committed to report accurately on events in Gaza. I have filed reports as Israeli fighter jets bombed Gaza City. I have interviewed mothers as they watched their children die in hospitals unequipped to serve them because of Israel’s embargo. I have been recognized for my reporting, even in the United States and United Kingdom, where I have won two international awards. I have also been beaten and tortured by Israeli soldiers.

NO LONGER A LUNATIC

Carolyn Baker

"What is madness but nobility of soul At odds with circumstance"~ Theodore Roethke "In a Dark Time"

It's the same with everyone I speak to who's been watching the downward spiral of empire for any length of time: "I can't believe how fast things are unraveling", we all say to each other. The incessant mantra these days from people who haven't been paying attention is that "things are going to get better", but almost no one is denying that we are in uncharted waters beyond anything we've experienced since the Great Depression. The uninformed are traumatized, and traumatized people almost always revert to "it's going to get better" thinking in order to cope with their current plight.
