The loathsome smearing of Israel`s critics

Johann Hari

Carlos © Latuff

The Independent / ISRAELeNEWS

In the US and Britain, there is a campaign to smear anybody who tries to describe the plight of the Palestinian people. It is an attempt to intimidate and silence – and to a large degree, it works. There is nobody these self-appointed spokesmen for Israel will not attack as anti-Jewish: liberal Jews, rabbis, even Holocaust survivors.

My own case isn't especially important, but it illustrates how the wider process of intimidation works. I have worked undercover at both the Finsbury Park mosque and among neo-Nazi Holocaust deniers to expose the Jew-hatred there; when I went on the Islam Channel to challenge the anti-Semitism of Islamists, I received a rash of death threats calling me "a Jew-lover", "a Zionist-homo pig" and more. Ah, but wait. I have also reported from Gaza and the West Bank.

Last week, I wrote an article that described how untreated sewage was being pumped from illegal Israeli settlements on to Palestinian land, contaminating their reservoirs. This isn't controversial. It has been documented by Friends of the Earth, and I have seen it with my own eyes.

The response? There was little attempt to dispute the facts I offered. Instead, some of the most high profile "pro-Israel" writers and media monitoring groups – including Honest Reporting and Camera – said I an anti-Jewish bigot akin to Joseph Goebbels and Mahmoud Ahmadinejadh, while Melanie Phillips even linked the stabbing of two Jewish people in North London to articles like mine. Vast numbers of e-mails came flooding in calling for me to be sacked.

Any attempt to describe accurately the situation for Palestinians is met like this. If you recount the pumping of sewage onto Palestinian land, "Honest Reporting" claims you are reviving the anti-Semitic myth of Jews "poisoning the wells." If you interview a woman whose baby died in 2002 because she was detained – in labour – by Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint within the West Bank, "Honest Reporting" will say you didn't explain "the real cause": the election of Hamas in, um, 2006. And on, and on.

The former editor of Israel's leading newspaper, Ha'aretz, David Landau, calls the behaviour of these groups "nascent McCarthyism". Those responsible hold extreme positions of their own that place them way to the right of most Israelis. Alan Dershowitz and Melanie Phillips are two of the most prominent figures sent in to attack anyone who disagrees with the Israeli right. Dershowitz is a lawyer, Harvard professor and author of The Case For Israel. He sees ethnic cleansing as a trifling matter, writing: "Political solutions often require the movement of people, and such movement is not always voluntary ... It is a fifth-rate issue analogous in many respects to some massive urban renewal." If a prominent American figure takes a position on Israel to the left of this, Dershowitz often takes to the airwaves to call them anti-Semites and bigots.

The journalist Melanie Phillips performs a similar role in Britain. Last year a group called Independent Jewish Voices was established with this mission statement: "Palestinians and Israelis alike have the right to peace and security." Jews including Mike Leigh, Stephen Fry and Rabbi David Goldberg joined. Phillips swiftly dubbed them "Jews For Genocide", and said they "encourage" the "killers" of Jews. Where does this come from? She says the Palestinians are an "artificial" people who can be collectively punished because they are "a terrorist population". She believes that while "individual Palestinians may deserve compassion, their cause amounts to Holocaust denial as a national project". Honest Reporting quotes Phillips as a model of reliable reporting.

These individuals spray accusations of anti-Semitism so liberally that by their standards, a majority of Jewish Israelis have anti-Semitic tendencies. Dershowitz said Jimmy Carter's decision to speak to the elected Hamas government "border[ed] on anti-Semitism." A Ha'aretz poll last month found that 64 per cent of Israelis want their government to do just that.

As US President, Jimmy Carter showed his commitment to Israel by giving it more aid than anywhere else and brokering the only peace deal with an Arab regime the country has ever enjoyed. He also wants to see a safe and secure Palestine alongside it – so last year he wrote a book called Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid. It is a bland and factual canter through the major human rights reports. There is nothing there you can't read in the mainstream Israeli press every day. Carter's comparison of life on the West Bank (not within Israel) to Apartheid South Africa is not new. The West Bank is ruled in the interests of a small Jewish minority; it is bisected by roads for the Jewish settlers from which Palestinians are banned. The Israeli human rights group B'tselem says this "bears striking similarities to the racist Apartheid regime". Yet for repeating these facts in the US, Carter has widely called "a racist". Several universities have even refused to let the ex-President speak to their students.

These campus battles often succeed. Norman Finkelstein is a political scientist in the US whose parents were both Jewish survivors of the Warsaw ghetto and the Nazi concentration camps. They lost every blood relative. He made his reputation exposing a hoax called From Time Immemorial by Joan Peters which claimed that Palestine was virtually empty when Zionist settlers arrived, and the people claiming to be Palestinians were mostly impostors who had come from local areas to cash in. Finkelstein showed it to be scarred by falsified figures and gross misreading of sources. From that moment on, he was smeared as an anti-Semite by those who had lauded the book.

But it was when Finkelstein revealed two years ago that Alan Dershowitz had, without acknowledgement, drawn wholesale from Peters' hoax for his book The Case For Israel, that the worst began. Dershowitz campaigned to make sure Finkelstein was denied tenure at his university. He even claimed that Finkelstein's mother – who made it through Maidenek and two slave-labour camps – had collaborated with the Nazis. The campaign worked. Finkelstein was let go by De Paul University, simply for speaking the truth.

Are the likes of Dershowitz and Phillips and Honest Reporting becoming more shrill because they can sense they are losing the argument? Liberal Jews – the majority – are now setting up rivals to the hard-right organisations they work with, because they believe this campaign of demonisation is damaging us all. It damages the Palestinians, because it prevents honest discussion of their plight. It damages the Israelis, because it pushes them further down an aggressive and futile path. And it damages diaspora Jews, because it makes real anti-Semitism harder to deal with.

We need to look the witch-hunters in the eye and say, as Joseph Welch said to Joe McCarthy himself: "You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"

Unfortunately, there is no end to the barrage of criticism leveled at any author writing about any controversial subject.
Mr Hari is eloquent when he describes being called both a Jew lover, or Joseph Goebbels depending on what issue he is writing about.
There is now unlimited space on the internet devoted to any writer willing to support the editorial themes of the site that hosts him.
Mr. Khalid Amayreh writes a weekly screed here and doesn't even need to respond to the various comments he elicits from the readers. He gets to continue no matter what his critics write about him.
The point is, as long as his comments are not censored, and they are not, writers are subjected to the reactions they engender from the readers.

If a writer cannot take the negative criticisms his writings provoke, without calling those comments 'smearing', then he should stop writing. Use your linguistic skills to convince the readers and others of the truth of your positions instead of complaining that you are getting smeared. As far as I know, this website is available to anyone in Israel with internet access. That someone who reads it, doesnt like it, or calls it anti-anything is the beauty of freedom.

A former editor of Haaretz is quoted above, supporting the author. If another former editor of another paper comments that the author is an idiot, does that mean they are trying to censor the author? What is ironic is that in the Middle East you are hard pressed to name the countries that allow this sort of public dissent, and yet the focus of this article is on Israel.

Phillo,
It is very important to distinguish between author and article, between person and issue. In (soccer) football you go after the ball, not the man. Criticism & comments should focus on the article and its particular content.

A word about MENTALITIES: One ought to be aware of one’s own fundamental (default) mentality. –Am I being predatory? Am I trying to make people shut up, go away? Do I believe in competition? Do I believe in supremacy? Do I think like this: my people (tribe etc.) right or wrong? Do I believe that the world is a jungle?

OR, am I tolerant and accepting of the fact that the other guy is of a different opinion than I am, and do I deep down sincerely believe that even opposite points of view are a very contributing factor to my own well-being and to the over all balance of things? Do I believe in co-operation? Do I believe that the world is a huge garden, where no plant or flower is more important than the other crops?

It seems to me that the Zionists are predatory, that they constantly are attacking both people and issues, that they are trying to eliminate people and distort & cloud the issues as much as they can. Finkelstein attacked a book written by Dershowitz, Dershowitz attacked Finkelstein, trying to eliminate him. Smears are efforts at eliminating a person, at making him go away. Successfully proving that a book has been plagiarized and is a hoax is not a smear job. It is to deal matter-of-factly with an issue, however uncomfortable this may be for the author of the book.

The People’s Voice has twice been at the receiving end of the efforts of rabid Zionists at making Google take it off its lists. You blithely refer to TPV saying that “[t]hat someone who reads it, doesn’t like it, or calls it anti-anything is the beauty of freedom.” TPV has been reinstated both times after a campaign by its many supporters. The freedom you refer to should generally be directed at the issues, not at people OR websites!

The one possible exception would be, I guess, when dealing with hypocrites. In their case the rot has set in in the very core of their being, and (as an expediency) this problem has to be dealt with first, and head on at that. The overall goal would be to heal and to lay the foundations for a profitable conversation with them later on, if at all possible. But if the purpose is to destroy, the attack would be vicious, and there’s NO beauty in such an attack on a person (or on a website, for that matter).

Recently Israel and her predatory supporters have succeeded in eliminating a number of sites that they dislike. –This is precisely the kind of behavior that is so damaging to a peaceful co-existence, to democracy and freedom of thought. Wouldn't you agree, Phillo?

Jews love to attack Christians and stir up hatred against evangelicals. At least these people are relegated to the religious channel Trinity Broadcasting and they are not on CNN, FOX, ABC, CBS, NBC, etc.

The only religion that is forced upon everyone and is enforced by all the newspapers, magazines, editors, schools, teachers, principals, churches, The White House, Congress, Senate, State Department, Pentagon, and that is in every crevice and space of our country to which every knee must bow is The Holocaust and Anti-semitism.

The term 'antisemitic' is used to define the people whom the jews choose to HATE.

Hate crimes are any crime committed by any person or group of people whom the jews choose to HATE.

It is all just censorship under another guise.

The fact remains that the ONLY people who need censorship to survive are people who live by lies alone.

It is like the holohoax. The more you research this jewish fairy tale the less evidence you find to support that it ever happened. So the typical jewish response is to enact laws making it illegal to question any of the details regarding their favorite fairy tale.

If in fact the holohoax had actually happened as presented there would be no need for laws to imprison anybody who questioned this mythical event because the evidence would be so overwhelming that it would not require the crutch of censorship!

People keep talking about black on white crime and illegal immigration. YET all of these are a symptom of a much larger problem. The disease in the world today is called jew, everything else is just a symptom and please ignore Philo because he has already been exposed as a zionazi disinformation specialist.

CelticKnight,

For the record, the editors of The People's Voice have a problem with two of your statements:

"The disease in the world today is called jew, everything else is just a symptom."

This is an anti-Semitic statement by any account. To lump all Jews together in one convenient target group is NOT ok with The People's Voice.

"Hate crimes are any crime committed by any person or group of people whom the jews choose to HATE."

This statement is borderline -the problem with it being the part that refers to "the jews". This is unfair. -All Jews do certainly NOT choose to hate. On the contrary, many of them have chosen to extend love and understanding and are true friends of humanity. You seem to ignore this fact.

We will not delete your comment, but we do consider it necessary to put it to you bluntly that we neither condone nor accept two of your statements.

How dare anybody tell the truth regarding the self chosen!

The fact remains that the hate crimes laws are being pushed worldwide by the Israeli lobby.

Failure to face the truth is to play directly into the hands of these saprophytes.

Right now in the world we have how many wars raging that were started by the Israeli lobby? ? ?

In the bible it clearly states that by their work and works you shall know them.

So turn a blind eye if you wish but I refuse to cuddle up with the very people who stab me in the back with every opportunity they get!

CelticKnight,

You're absolutely right -the hate crime laws ARE being pushed by the Israeli lobby.

This repulsive lobby is very evil, and we certainly do not wish to turn a blid eye!

We would agree with most of what you've said in all of your comments so far. Your presence here (on TPV) is very positive and we hope that you will continue commenting.
