Popular Committee Against Siege (PCAS)
The siege of the Gaza Strip has lasted for more than 9 months now, and a new kind of target has become the “victims” of the siege...the 3900 factories and workshops that have been closed and / or completely destroyed by Israel.
This “cemetery” was just a creative idea that popped up from nowhere as a result of the collapse of the industrial sector. About 40 tombs were prepared as if they were meant to be ordinary graves. They are meant to symbolize the death of the industrial sector. The tombstones were inscribed with the names of factories and the numbers of employees who lost their jobs.
The Popular Committee Against Siege (PCAS) honored these factories (victims) through establishing new cemetery. -A cemetery that would bring more media focus on the Gaza strip, smashed and destroyed by Israel.
All these factories, workshops and laboratories have now stopped working. This forced stoppage is due to the unavailability of essential raw materials. Consequently, 70.000 people have lost their jobs.
A delegation from the PCAS headed by Chairman Jamal El Khoudary visited the cemetery alongside massive media coverage.
Mr. El Khoudary told the media that the recent measures of the Israelis had destroyed the economy of occupied Gaza, “Gaza is under a severe siege that aims at destroying all aspects of life,"
He added that PCAS will work hard to end the Gaza siege through many new creative means. "Many actions will be done soon; we have finished preparing a long-term strategy as we predict siege will last more,"
Finally, it must be pointed out, and this can hardly be overemphasized, that the industrial sector depends entirely on imported raw materials and depend entirely on the import of machinery spare parts for maintenance. Products of this sector are being exported abroad for revenue.
Palestinian goods trapped in Israeli seaports amounted to 300 million dollars in value. This production is very important in order to cater to the basic needs of the population. By passing a number of laws, the Israeli government has blocked merchants from getting their supplies in legally.
