USS Liberty: American Treachery

Mark Glenn

Liberty turns to evade Israeli torpedo boats.

American Treachery in the Attack on the USS Liberty Much Deeper Than Previously Thought

For those who follow the intrigues and explosive events surrounding the relationship between America and Israel over the last 4 decades it is easy to "get into a rut" so to speak and blame every single catastrophic event solely on the treachery of Israel. The tragedy though (and certainly the part hardest to swallow by patriotic Americans who would just as soon take their own lives as betray their fellow countrymen) is that there have been and are players on the American side of the equation whose hands are just as dirty as those of their Israeli counterparts.

Whether it was the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the assassination of JFK, the bombing of the Twin Towers in 1993, the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in 1995 or the events taking place on 9/11, the fact is that the only way these could have taken place is if elements within the US government infrastructure cooperated with the planning, execution and subsequent dissemination of propaganda in the aftermath of these operations.

Now, a new and terrible tale has surfaced indicating yet again that elements of the US government were involved at the highest level in even more criminal acts against the very same American people whom she is charged with protecting. The case in question involves the June 8 th, 1967 attack on the USS Liberty by the air and naval forces of the state of Israel during the height of the Arab-Israeli War that led to the deaths of 34 American servicemen. Long-believed that players within the Johnson administration simply assisted in the cover-up of the attack so as "not to embarrass" America's greatest ally, Israel, it now it appears that American political, intelligence and military persons played a key role in setting up the Liberty for the purpose of igniting WWIII in what was code-named "Operation Cyanide".

It was a heady time, to be sure. The US and the USSR were neck-deep in what was called the Cold War and by all appearances it seemed that a shooting match between the two superpowers was an inevitability. The reader should keep in mind that this was only a few short years after the Cuban Missile Crisis and a time when America seemed unable to stop the spread of communism in Asia and other parts of the world. In the Middle East, states such as Egypt, with dynamic, fiery and recalcitrant leaders such as Nasser were forming strong bonds with the Soviets for military and economic aid. Using the same rational that led to America inserting herself militarily into areas such as Korea and Vietnam, it was believed that if not stopped the Soviets would entrench themselves in the Middle East to the point that America's access to the oil of that region would be directly jeopardized and that, just as the communists had predicted decades before, the West would be conquered "without a shot being fired".

It has long been assumed that Israel's deliberate attack on the USS Liberty was just another of her made-to-order false flag operations done simply for the purpose of dragging an unwilling America into a Middle East war on the side of the Jewish state. However, new information uncovered by former BBC investigative journalist Peter Hounam reveals that America--and more specifically the administration of Lyndon Johnson--was not as much the unsuspecting victim in all of this that she has claimed these last 40 years. Based on relatively new evidence, the attack on the Liberty was actually part of a much larger plan and that the Liberty incident was just one domino in a series of them that had as the ultimate goal a real-live shooting war between the US and the USSR. Had the Liberty been sunk with no witnesses as planned, the world would be a much different place now as a result, and certainly not for the better.

In short, what was planned for that awful day in American history was that the a defenseless, unarmed American ship sailing in international waters off the coast of Egypt be sunk to the bottom of the Mediterranean and that the Soviets and their Arab allies (in particular Egypt) would be blamed for the event. As with the sinking of the USS Maine nearly 70 years earlier, the cry would be "Remember the USS Liberty" and America's "justifiable" response to such a horrendous act would be the launching of nuclear weapons against Egypt, the USSR's ally. Working in tandem with the US would be allies such as Israel, Great Britain and, interestingly, Australia. The end result would be a Middle East free of any Soviet presence, leaving America and her ally Israel in possession of Arab oil for the foreseeable future and in a better position to dictate terms to the communists.

In the minds of powerful men such as these--men who sit in comfortable offices and expensive chairs and who do not have to answer to anyone for their actions, the rationale for such an act is simple--better that 300 men die in the service of their country than that the 'free world' fall into the clutches of Soviet communism. What prevented all of this from taking place was that--simply by the grace of God--the Liberty did not sink and the world was spared, at least temporarily.

Of course there is no official confirmation of Operation Cyanide. In fact there is no mention of it at all. In various interviews that have been conducted over the years, individuals from Secretary of Defense McNamara to Dean Rusk to Richard Helms to Mossad spy chief Rafael Eitan have demonstrated great intellectual and verbal energy for men their age when discussing various items but who then clam up instantaneously when Operation Cyanide is mentioned as if they were witnesses to a Mafia hit and feared for their lives.

Nevertheless the smaller players who were involved at that time have a different tale to tell, and piecing together all the small parts that they individually bring to the table fleshes out a picture that, although not crystal clear, is clear enough to suggest that America was involved in the murder of 34 of her young men on June 8 th 1967 in a much deeper fashion than previously thought. For the sake of those men who died that day and for those who survived the attack physically but who have endured the assault of lies that has been waged against them these last 40 years, the truth concerning what took place that day must be told. In the opinion of many, the Liberty incident may very well hold the key to freeing America from the bondage she suffers under men such as those who have murdered--not only her people, but as well her political system.

Beginning in June, AFP will begin running a series of exclusive articles going into deeper detail the mechanics of "Operation Cyanide" with an individual who worked in US Intelligence circles and has first-hand knowledge of the events that took place before, during and after June 8 th 1967. What he has to say has never before been published.

Nice article.

It appears that there is plenty more to uncover on the U.S. side of the story these days. Perhaps in doing so, we'll discover more about the involvement of several countries — for example, the extent of U.S. and British "support" of Israel during the war.

On another tangent...

You probably already know this, but there's one particular goon out there making a living telling lies about the USS Liberty attack and the so-called "investigations" that followed. Ahron Jay Cristol: http://www.ussliberty.org/thebiglie.htm (He's to the USS Liberty attack what Steve Emerson is to terrorism: a complete Zioneocon hack.

Thanks for the heads-up on the AFP series; I can hardly wait.

I look forward to your AFP series. I only learned about the USS Liberty attack 2 years ago. I have since written to newspapers, TV news stations asking that reveal the story as a 40th anniversary memorial. I haven't heard from any as of today.

Interesting article. As a Navy cryppie, lots of personal interest.

May be an interesting exercise to attempt to establish links between this story and the story told in the new David Talbot book, "Brothers." One of the key trheads in the book links a group of military and intelligence folks to a movement to aggressively confront the USSR in an attempt to get the inevitable war started. The implications of this are wide, and they include links to the Kennedy assassination. Sounds like a similar group with similar thinking within the government could be linked to this Liberty story.

cheers,

The premise of "Operation Cyanide" is eroded by facts. When the 6th Fleet Commander ordered the launch of aircraft in support of the Liberty within minutes there was an ultimatum sent via the Moscow HotLine from Moscow to the President informing the United States that such a show of force would be considered support for Israel and that subject aircraft would be fired upon by Soviet surface ships located in the area off of Israel. A response from the President was that the aircraft would be recalled, and they were. In other words, the United States had every opportunity to involve the Soviet Union in a showdown battle in the Eastern Mediterranean, but did not take it! The size of the Russian armada that was present in the Mediterranean at that time would have caused considerable destruction upon the ships assigned to the 6th Fleet. While the United States tried to straddle the political fence between Israel and the Arab oil states, it was clearly understood by all concerned that the United States, Britian, France and other nations would not stand for the Arabs to push the Israelies into the sea. Since June will be the 40th year since the Liberty incident "Operation Cyanide" looks more to me to be a contribed attempt by Israeli Intelligence to remove and minimize editorial blame against the IDF for a deliberate attack upon the USS Liberty. Israel certainly knew all too well that in 1956, it was the United States who stopped the combined assault by Israel, Great Britian, and France upon the Suez Canal and Egypt. When the USS Liberty arrived close enough to gather high frequency communications, Israel had one key objective they wanted more than anything else, except for east Jerusalem, that they sought in their conflict with the Arabs--that was the Golani Heights. The Golani Heights met that Israel, in retailiation for the Arab armies surround them, would invade Syrian territory. Could they afford to allow the USS Liberty to communicate messages to the American Government revealing the the ongoing movement of forces from the Sinai to the Golani Heights approach? Absolutely not! How could they prevent it from happening? In 1967, the Israeli Defense Force was considered one of the best military organizations in the world--even the June 1967 campaign reveals that very fact! How could one of the best military organizations make one of the most stupid blunders of all time? They had overflown the USS Liberty at low altitude with Nord aircraft configured for maritime patrol, the USS Liberty had very conspicious antennas easily spotted from the air, the ship was flying an American flag--also easily identified with a simple pair of binoculars, the hull lettering and even the "Battleship Gray" paint set it apart as being American! The Israelis claimed they attacked an "unidentified ship." Now why would they have done that with all the Russian ships just off shore? Do you think for one minute the IDF would take a chance on an "unidentifed ship"? What would have happened if they ship turned out to be one of those Russian intelligence collection ships, an AGI, which were also in the vicinity? Could they take a chance on an "unidentified ship?" It takes no rocket scientist to answer that--of course not! Concerning the Israeli torpedo boats that made the attack, do you think they had any binoculars aboard those boats? Why of course they did--if the target was "unidentified" don't you think they would have really been trying to make sure who it was? Oh, they came up with that Egyptian cow freighter that was 1/3 the size of the Liberty and looked nothing like it, and was certainly not any kind of military target. Now do you think the Israelies could afford to waste valuable torpedoes on an old derelict, cow freighter? In my opinion, Operation Cyanide should be investigated backward to see where and who first came up this concoction of an idea. To me it smells like a red herring. Robert N. Edwards Commander, Chaplain Corps, USN (Retired) In 1967, I was a Petty Officer First Class Navy linguist with two language skills critical for that time who had temporary duty orders to deploy from my home base in Turkey to board the USS Liberty at a port call in Athen, Greece. However, do to the potential conflict heating up the USS Liberty was ordered east along the coast near north Africa, after the port call at Rota, to gather what ever Arab intelligence could be useful while enroute to the eastern Med. As a result, three other sailors (all Russian linguist) from my base then on temporary assignment at Rota, Spain were placed aboard when it made a port call there to replace myself and a Navy Arab linguist who would have accompanied me. In October of 1967, I was ordered from Turkey to the Pentagon where I served three years at the Washington-Moscow Hotline, within the National Military Command Center.

Nice try! You probably didn't even write this disinformation hit piece yourself. Unsupported allegations about the Russians -Moscow hotline and all! Go figure. All the lies, yours and the Zionists', are unraveling. What about defending your own country and not just "Israel"?

Interesting piece. But just one question. Why are you guys so hung up on an event that happened 40 years ago!?! Israel apologized, paid reparations and everyone moved on. Too bad we cant say the same for other events perpetrated on US forces or personnel by Islamists. Just to name a few: the USS Cole, the US Marine barracks bombing in early 80's by Hzbullah that killed almost 300 US servicemen, the Us Embassy in Tanzania, THE TAKING OF THE US EMBASSY BY IRANIANS IN 1979, the downing of Pan AM jet by Libya, 911 (!), and so and so and so on. Its almost pathetic the way you guys are chasing after this...for God's sake...its 40 years old...nobody really cares anymore. I think that most rational people believe an honest mistake was made. Its also pathetic that way you guys are trying to create a wedge between Israel and the US with something as stupid as this. The only people listening are like minded folks..and me. I also think that maybe it would be different if you were doing this because you somehow felt bad for the deaths of those US sailors, but you dont. You really couldnt care less as evidenced by your continued bashing of our soldiers in Iraq. As a matter of fact, if it was an Arab army that attacked the ship, you'd be saying something like the Arabs did the right thing..they were only protecting their borders from the evil US. But..hey. You guys already know all of this. Just wanted to weigh in. Thanks. Peace to all of you.
Kusamek.
