This new bill would license torture. It would also grant amnesty to past torturers and repeal nearly every legal principle that makes freedom and justice possible.
The most basic right that would be abrogated is the freedom from arbitrary detention and torture. The bill would deny any person labeled a terrorist the right to challenge the legality of his detention and treatment in court. The government would be able to imprison suspects for as long as it wishes, without charging them with any crime.
