As the federal government shutdown continues, Secretary of State John Kerry heads to Asia for secret talks on a sweeping new trade deal, the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The TPP is often referred to by critics as "NAFTA on steroids," and would establishing a free-trade zone that would stretch from Vietnam to Chile, encompass 800 million people -- about a third of world trade and nearly 40 percent of the global economy. While the text of the treaty has been largely negotiated behind closed doors and until June, kept secret from Congress, more than 600 corporate advisors reportedly have access to the measure, including employees of Halliburton, and Monsanto. "This is not mainly about trade," says Lori Wallach, director of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch. "It is a corporate trojan horse. The agreement has 29 chapters, and only five of them have to do with trade. The other 24 chapters either handcuff our domestic governments -- limiting food safety, environmental standards, financial regulation, energy and climate policy -- or establishing new powers for corporations."

In an address to the United Nations General Assembly, President Obama openly embraced an aggressive military doctrine backed by previous administrations on using armed force beyond the international norm of self-defense. Obama told the world that the United States is prepared to use its military to defend what he called "our core interests" in the Middle East: U.S. access to oil. "[Obama] basically came out and said the U.S. is an imperialist nation and we're going to do whatever we need to do to conquer areas [and] take resources from people around the world," says independent journalist Jeremy Scahill.

On Wed. Sept. 18th, in front of Penn Station in Bmore, Dr. Margaret Flowers shared her views on the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement. She labeled it, “NAFTA on steroids.” Dr. Flowers underscored that the treaty has been “negotiated in secret,” and its terms, “classified.” She said that President Barack Obama has asked to “Fast Track” the treaty. This would allow him to sign it into law before the U.S.Congress is given an “up or down vote on it.” In other words, the measure would not go through the usual legislative democratic process, with hearings, transparency, the calling of witnesses, etc.

Try this for an example of what may be in our future. A U.S. law required food companies to disclose whether tuna is “dolphin-safe” or not. A Mexican company, however, under NAFTA, complained that it “restricted trade.” It won the case!

Whatever is in the final version of the “Trans-Pacific Partnership,” will become the Law of our Land. It will supersede all of our laws and regulations dealing with food, public health and safety, workers rights, the internet, the environment, etc. The AFL-CIO has passed a Resolution opposing the TPP.
