A renowned US historian says Russia will respond to a war on Syria as anti-Syrian propaganda by Israeli, NATO and US officials suggesting a possible military intervention in the Arab country is escalating, Press TV reports. In an exclusive interview with Press TV, Dr. Webster Griffin Tarpley pointed to comments made by the US Department of State’s spokesperson, Victoria Nuland, and the NATO chief, Andres Fogh Rasmussen, who compared Syria to Bosnia, with “the obvious implication that NATO may do a unilateral, outside of the UN Security Council, bombing attack.”

Back in 1992 the Pentagon’s Joint Chiefs of Staff held a "Strategy Essay Competition." The winner was a National War College student paper entitled, "The Origins of the American Military Coup of 2012." Authored by Colonel Charles J. Dunlap, Jr. the paper is a well documented, "darkly imagined excursion into the future." The ostensibly fictional work is written from the perspective of an imprisoned senior military officer about to be executed for opposing the military takeover of America, a coup accomplished through "legal" means. The essay makes the point that the coup was "the outgrowth of trends visible as far back as 1992," including "the massive diversion of military forces to civilian uses," particularly law enforcement.

Rising interest rates in bond markets demonstrate that the €100 billion Spanish bailout last weekend has done nothing to resolve the euro zone crisis and may well have made it even worse. The rate on Spanish 10-year bonds climbed to the danger level of 6.8 percent Wednesday, while interest rates on Italian one-year government debt reached their highest levels since last December.

The number of the Americans applying for unemployment benefits has risen as the hiring process remains sluggish in the job market. The US Labor Department said on Thursday that applications for weekly benefits rose by 6,000 to a seasonally-adjusted 386,000, AFP reported.

The housing market has shown some promising signs of late, but a fresh batch of foreclosure data offers a reminder that any recovery from the housing bust will likely be slow, spotty and painful. Central banks from major economies stand ready to take steps to stabilize financial markets by providing liquidity and preventing a credit squeeze if the outcome of Greek elections on Sunday causes tumultuous trading, G20 officials told Reuters. A majority of Americans, it seems, approve of drone strikes against terrorists, even if they kill innocent bystanders. The Pew Global Attitudes Project poll found that while most people worldwide disapprove of the tactic, 62 percent of Americans approved of the drone strikes, while 28 percent disapproved. While 74 percent of Republicans approved, surprisingly, 60 percent of independents and 58 percent of Democrats also approved.
