It may still be news to you that there has been a fundamental change in the political character of the US, with effective suspension of the Constitution, an end to freedoms once protected in the Bill of Rights, and the abandonment of the rule of law as power is concentrated in the executive branch of government in a one party state (see Welcome). The final stage in the transformation to an authoritarian society of control was not a response to a crisis (9/11 trade-off of ‘freedom for security’), but the intended arrival of a totalitarian future, enabled by technological change and the crime of the 9/11 catalyst event.

A new medical study has found that electrical shock delivered to the chest by a Taser or stun gun - used by over 16,700 law enforcement agencies in 107 countries - can lead to cardiac arrest and sudden death. While Amnesty International and other groups have long cited the dangers of tasing, the study in the journal Circulation is the first to appear in a peer-reviewed publication. It looked at the cases of eight people who went into cardiac arrest after being shocked by a Taser X26 fired at a distance. Seven died.

It's hard to watch the Romney campaign with a straight face. Their latest crackup has one Romney adviser, John Lehman, warning of the “Soviet threat," and another, Pierre Prosper, complaining that the administration hasn't done enough to stand with Czechoslovakia. And those comments were hardly the first time we've heard throwbacks to the Cold War in this campaign. But don't laugh too hard—it might distract from the dangerous and discredited worldview Romney's foreign policy team is pushing.

Controversial research on a hybrid strain of bird flu that could potentially spread between humans was published on Wednesday in Nature after security restrictions on the work were lifted. Scientists created the virus by merging a mutated strain of bird flu with the "swine flu" virus that sparked a human pandemic in 2009. The hybrid strain spread easily between ferrets – the best proxy that flu researchers have for people – but was not lethal and could be controlled with antiviral drugs and bird flu vaccines.

As the US beefs up its military presence in the Persian Gulf region, Pentagon strategists estimate that they would need less than a month to defeat Iranian forces should a military conflict take place. US Central Command (CENTCOM) believes it can destroy or significantly degrade Iran's conventional armed forces in about three weeks using air and sea strikes, a defense source told The Washington Post.
