Quake measuring 5.9 triggers flight disruptions and mass evacuations but spares east coast of major damage. An earthquake has hit United States' east coast, and was felt as far away as Canada, shaking buildings, delaying flights, and sending thousands of frightened workers into the streets. There have been no reports of any major damage or injuries from the earthquake, which measured 5.9 on the Richter scale. The US Geological Survey said the epi-centre of the quake was in Mineral, Virginia, at a very shallow depth of 1km.

Gaddafi's influential son appears with supporters in Tripoli, disproving opposition claims that he had been captured. Saif al-Islam, the son of Muammar Gaddafi who was reported captured by Libyan opposition forces on Sunday, has made a defiant public appearance in Tripoli. Television footage showed Saif, considered the most influential and politically active of Gaddafi's children, pumping his fists in the air, smiling, waving and shaking hands with supporters. At one point, he was pictured holding his arms aloft with each hand making the "V" for victory sign.
