On Feb 1, 2011 in a remark on the riots of the Egyptians Obama stated, “Now, it is not the role of any other country to determine Egypt's leaders. Only the Egyptian people can do that.” This is the right position to take except that the actual role of the United States, and the Western counties in general, in the Middle East has been just the opposite. “We” – the dominant Western “we” – do believe in the freedom of every human being and all peoples of the world, but the problem is that “we” want them to be free in the ways we define freedom for them.

Seems John "The Perv" Pistole, chief deviant at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), "wants to hear our [ideas]" on "transportation security." Indeed. Haven’t outraged passengers shrieked ideas a-plenty at airports as The Perv’s underlings sexually abuse them? Yet this sociopath not only ignores the clamor, he refuses to change "screening procedures" however heartrending those shrieks become.

Obama administration officials reacted to yesterday’s ouster of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak with hypocritical declarations of solidarity with the democratic aspirations of the Egyptian masses. Their comments barely disguised, however, the alarm they felt at the downfall of a dictator the US government has backed for 31 years. In a perfunctory six-minute address, after which he took no questions, President Obama declared the United States to be a “friend and partner to Egypt.” He praised the “moral force of nonviolence” as the principle underlying the protests, saying it “bent the arc of history toward justice once more.”

There is justified jubilation in the streets of Cairo, Alexandria and other cities, as millions of Egyptian workers and youth celebrate their historic victory. These extraordinary events are a turning point not only for Egypt, but for the entire world. They have shown the immense social power of the working class, unanswerably refuting claims that the collapse of the Soviet Union signified the “end of history”—that is, the end of class struggle as a factor in human affairs. The victorious heroism of the masses of Egypt in the face of torture, arrests and repression are an inspiration for workers and youth around the globe.
