Family law attorneys say many of these "deadbeats" are right where they belong. They have been found in willful contempt of court for repeatedly refusing to pay their child support, failing to try to find work or hiding their income and assets. But many parents are being jailed even though they have no ability to pay, creating modern-day debtor's prisons, according to motions being filed in Georgia courts. The state should provide lawyers to indigent parents for their civil-contempt hearings to ensure due process, the filings say. America tried debtors prisons a hundred years ago and it didn't work and caused tremendous suffering and ultimately proved to be a drag on society. So why debtors prison today. America already imprisons more people than the entire world combined with the exception of China which executes a very high percentage. The slave drivers are running out of victims and ways to squeeze out more profits. Consider the tremendous profits that are generated by criminalizing non criminal activities like failing to pay child support or smoking pot. Laws like these make some fifty million Americans potential inmates of the corporate prison system.
