The US is spewing poison and killing villagers, stealing oil-rich land in the name of the Drug War. Is $1.6 billion in US drug-war aid intended to solve Colombia's problems, or make them worse? Human rights advocates believe that it will finance the world's largest aerial fumigation campaign, the mass slaughter of villagers, poisoning of Colombia's lands, and the creation of a South American Vietnam.
Blood for oil 450 members of the U'wa tribe of Colombia, some of them women and children, scattered across the morning soil in front of an advancing line of bulldozers, hired by Occidental Petroleum. Police and military fired tear gas grenades into the families as some of them escaped into the forest, and some into the Cubujon river. Three of the children, unable to fight the river's current, drowned.
While John le Carré is famous for his spy novels, he wrote a widely read antiwar essay in 2003 titled "The United States of America Has Gone Mad." He reads an excerpt. [includes rush transcript]
David Cornwell, the legendary British novelist who writes under the name John le Carré, joins us in London. A former British spy, his books include The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and The Constant Gardener. On the heels of the publication of British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s Iraq war-defending memoir A Journey, le Carré explains why he refused to interview Blair and why he won’t be reading his memoir. Rabiha al Qassab, a British Iraqi woman who lives in London, describes the harrowing story of her husband, Ramze Shihab Ahmed. Having fled in 1998 after being accused of trying to overthrow Saddam Hussein, Ramze returned to Iraq last year to get his son out of prison. He, too, was arrested and was tortured. Like 30,000 other Iraqis, he and his son are being held without charge. [includes rush transcript]
Israeli authorities are preventing a sick Palestinian lawmaker from accessing health care, a former European parliamentarian said Monday. Palestinian Legislative Council member Khalida Jarrar was advised by doctors to undergo urgent brain scans more than two months ago, after tests at a Ramallah hospital revealed concerning results, former European Parliament vice president Luisa Morgantini said. The former EU official said Jarrar was advised to go to Amman, Jordan immediately as Palestinian hospitals were not equipped to administer the scans required. However for more than six weeks, Israeli security services have prevented Jarrar's travel due to "security reasons,"

THE actual figure of the US' national debt is much higher than the official sum of $US13.4 trillion ($14.3 trillion) given by the Congressional Budget Office, according to analysts cited by the New York Post. "The Government is lying about the amount of debt. It is engaging in Enron accounting," said Laurence Kotlikoff, an economist at Boston University and co-author of The Coming Generational Storm: What You Need to Know about America's Economic Future.
The US Congress is poised to vote this week on a bill that offers more than 2 million young illegal immigrants a path to citizenship, a move that will re-open the toxic debate on the issue ahead of the November mid-term elections. The vote could come as early as tomorrow.
The Tea Party's latest star, Christine O'Donnell, cancelled appearances on the Sunday news talkshows after a video in which she admitted to "dabbling in witchcraft" emerged over the weekend.
Almost nine years into longest war in US history, at a time when the US spends more on its military budget than the rest of the world combined and endless war seems a frighteningly realistic possibility, I spoke with Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), a long-time advocate for peace. Kucinich reminds us that there is another way:
The FBI gave inaccurate information to Congress and the public when it claimed a possible terrorism link to justify surveilling an anti-war rally in Pittsburgh, the Justice Department's inspector general said Monday in a report on the bureau's scrutiny of domestic activist groups.
"Christine O'Donnell is clearly a criminal, and like any crook she should be prosecuted," CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan said in a release. "Ms. O'Donnell has spent years embezzling money from her campaign to cover her personal expenses. Republicans and Democrats don't agree on much these days, but both sides should agree on one point: thieves belong in jail not the United States Senate."
The social safety net that helps millions of retired and disabled Americans remain in their homes and continue purchasing food is really a corrupt "Ponzi scheme" that should be made "voluntary," according to former Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey. Armey, who chairs FreedomWorks -- one of the political organizations responsible for bringing a greater Republican identification to the original, Ron Paul-supporting tea party groups -- made the comments during a roundtable at the Right Nation 2010 convention in Chicago. His attack on Social Security is unsurprising, as Armey and other Republican figures have for years led a charge to privatize or otherwise eliminate the generations-old safety net. So Americans, keep voting for republicans like Armey, so they can keep taking everything from you until you are completely impoverished and completely enslaved.

In interviews in recent weeks, Gen. David Petraeus has been taking a line on what will happen in mid-2011 that challenges President Barack Obama’s intention to begin a troop withdrawal from Afghanistan by that date. This new Petraeus line is the culmination of a brazen bait-and-switch maneuver on the war by the most powerful military commander in modern U.S. history.
Too Big To Fail Global Banks Will Collapse Between Now and First Quarter 2011 Readers of my articles will recall that I have warned as far back as December 2006, that the global banks will collapse when the Financial Tsunami hits the global economy in 2007. And as they say, the rest is history. Quantitative Easing (QE I) spearheaded by the Chairman of Federal Reserve, Ben Bernanke delayed the inevitable demise of the fiat shadow money banking system slightly over 18 months.
The Kremlin's news network has gained a global following with a quixotic blend of news and conspiracy. The 11 September attacks in New York were an inside job; the South Korean warship torpedoed in March was not sunk by North Korea, but probably by Japan or the US; and the world is run by the secretive Bilderberg Group, who pursue a "New World Order". Not the lonely ravings of a conspiracy-minded blogger, but all opinions aired recently on a satellite channel beamed into millions of American homes.
US pastor Terry Jones, who threatened to burn copies of the Koran, has been told he must pay $180,000 (£115,000) for security costs triggered by the controversy. The city of Gainesville, Florida said that local police agencies spent more than a month working on security plans to ensure the community close to the planned site of the burning was safe.
More than 2.5 million square kilometres of the Arctic Ocean have been opened up to the heat of the 24-hour summer sun. The carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels have melted the Arctic sea ice to its lowest volume since before the rise of human civilisation, dangerously upsetting the energy balance of the entire planet, climate scientists are reporting. "The Arctic sea ice has reached its four lowest summer extents (area covered) in the last four years," said Mark Serreze, director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center in the U.S. city of Boulder, Colorado.
Last Thursday Michael Hudson addressed the Council of Economic Advisors to the President of Brazil (CDES) . He offered an unsparing description of how the global economy is being shaped and exploited by Northern bankers. Then he outlined the ways in which Brazil and other major “BRIC” economies – Russia, Chinas, India – can steer an independent path and thus preserve and improve their nations’ condition . CounterPunch is delighted to feature here Dr Hudson’s very striking address. AC/JSC
The U.S. soldiers allegedly floated a plan as simple as it was savage: to randomly target and kill an Afghan civilian, and to get away with it. For weeks, according to Army charging documents, rogue members of a platoon from the 5th Stryker Combat Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, hatched the idea. Then, one day last winter, a solitary Afghan man approached them in the village of La Mohammed Kalay. The "kill team" activated the plan.
Forget big government – the same elite whose policies caused the financial collapse are now ready to launch the next phase of their fascist takeover of the economy – by forcing businesses to send employee paychecks straight to the government, who would then deduct the “appropriate tax” before the employee receives their wage, as the statist cancer of collectivism grows.
The election of a far-right party into Sweden's parliament shakes the country's political landscape. The Sweden Democrats (SD), which has described growth of the country's Muslim minority as the biggest foreign threat since the Second World War, won 20 seats in Sunday's parliamentary elections, leaving the two main blocs without a majority.
It is rather poetic that after a rollercoaster of a primary season in US politics, the furthest right 'Tea Party' Republican yet to emerge, Christine O'Donnell, stood victorious Tuesday night in the tiny state of Delaware. O'Donnell, a Republican so far to the right that she makes Sarah Palin look like Emma Goldman, beat popular Delaware congressman and former governor Mike Castle, in the race to see who would be the Republican nominee to run for Vice President Joe Biden's former seat in the US Senate.
Lawrence Davidson profiles Martin Peretz, the editor-in-chief of the New Republic. “Martin Peretz is a good example of that subset of Americans whose single-minded dedication to Israel makes them ... agents of a foreign power. Indeed, in his willingness to pronounce his affection in the most indiscrete way, Peretz can be seen as their spokesman.”
