The number of "problem" U.S. banks jumped 27 percent during the fourth quarter of 2009 to 702, the highest level since 1993 and a sign the industry's recovery is still shaky, regulators reported on Tuesday. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp said the industry overall eked out a profit of $914 million for the quarter, benefiting from a healing economy, but said the improvement was concentrated in the largest banks.

Good news, Americans are "downbeat about today. Upbeat about tomorrow," says the latest USA Today/Gallup Poll. "Americans feel battered by hard times, record home foreclosures, stubbornly high unemployment rates and war." And yes, we are "fed up with Washington and convinced more than 3 to 1 that the nation is heading in the wrong direction," yet there's "confidence that there will be better times ahead, that the classic American dream endures and hasn't been extinguished. It's not even at its low ebb." Why? Because we're in denial!
The value of Sterling plunged this afternoon after Bank of England chief Mervyn King told told MPs that Britain may have to print more money to boost the country's fragile economic recovery. Mr King sent the Pound into a fresh slump against the U.S. dollar after he admitted the Bank might extend its £200billion quantitative easing programme.
We hold these Truths to be self-evident...Iran will run-out of medical isotopes within a month; leaving nearly 850,000 patients without a critical tool for their diagnosis and treatment. Iran’s government repeated their request to buy or swap fuel (previous acceptance here), even though they are legally authorized to produce their own. The US-proposed delay for Iran to receive the enriched fuel after a wait of up to one year would kill Iranians in need of medical isotopes.

The number of mass layoffs by U.S. employers edged up in January as manufacturers stepped up job cuts, data showed on Tuesday, but probably not enough to alter views that the economy is on the brink of creating jobs. The Labor Department said the number of mass layoff actions -- defined as job cuts involving at least 50 people from a single employer -- increased by 35 to 1,761. Mass layoffs had trended lower since August.

Janet Napolitano wants to know what makes ordinary American citizens become extremists according to her own MIAC type definition (which all of our founding fathers meet, not just some). When folks like you are in command, complete traitors who care nothing about the US, our Constitution or Bill of Rights, but want only to destroy the US and fold it in to a one world global nazi/stasi style fascist regime, US citizens who understand that you are the "enemy within" become very concerned and angry. They start thinking how can we take our country back from traitors who have hijacked it.

There is a reason that 702 American banks, nearly one in ten, were on the FDIC “problem list” as of the end of 2009. A large number of small and mid-sized banks are burdened with home and commercial mortgages that are in default and may even go into foreclosure.

FROM TIME to time I ask myself: what would happen if the world’s governments decided to abolish all their spy agencies simultaneously? True, it would be a great blow to the authors and movie producers who make their living from secret service stories. Their products would lose their appeal.

A critical new report declares high blood pressure in the U.S. to be a "neglected disease"—a term usually used to describe mysterious tropical illnesses, not a well-known plague of rich countries. The Institute of Medicine said Monday that although nearly one in three adults has hypertension, and the rate is rising, fighting the disease apparently has fallen out of fashion.

WASHINGTON—The Senate voted to advance a $15 billion job-creation package Monday, showing a rare hint of bipartisanship as five Republicans voted to end debate on the Democratic bill, including newly elected Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts. Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown, shown at his temporary office on Capitol Hill Monday, backed the jobs bill in one of his first Senate votes. The measure, which includes tax breaks for businesses hiring unemployed workers, moved ahead on a 62-30 vote, with Sen. Ben Nelson (D., Neb.) voting against it. The Senate is expected to vote on final passage of the bill within days.
