I had lunch a while ago with some elderly ladies at a senior centre in Manhattan. Their lively conversation and bawdy personalities made it feel like an episode of the Golden Girls. But as I listened to them bemoan the cost of the meal ($2 a piece) and watched as they stood in line for the take home goody bag, which contained little more than bread and milk, it became apparent that the reality of the golden years for these women is vastly different than their fictional counterparts.

The movement of business interests into the halls of government is not a new phenomenon. However, the belief that government should be run with a sort of “business mentality” is a stark contrast to what we are used to seeing in the United States in the past 230 years.For decades, generations even, the government was expected to do whatever it could to provide for its people. Now, it is expected to do whatever it can to support businesses and create more corporate profits.
US states slash Medicaid

US states are imposing major cuts to Medicaid, the health insurance program for low income Americans jointly funded with the federal government. The cuts are being enacted in response to huge budget deficits in states throughout the country and a sharp increase in enrollment fuelled by the unemployment crisis.
