The Americans have their excuses in order – Earlier this year it was revealed that over 200,000 US weapons – including assault rifles and grenade launchers – are ‘missing’ from the US army’s inventory in Afghanistan. The US army is unable to provide serial numbers for a large number of the missing weapons and no records have been maintained for the location or disposition for the rest.

The United Nations’ Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) updated its “World Economic Situation and Prospects” report last Thursday, forecasting world growth this year of negative 2.6 percent. World trade is expected to decline by 11.1 percent—the sharpest annual contraction since the 1930s. The latest estimates are revised sharply downward from previous UN forecasts in January of positive 1 percent growth for 2009, with even the most pessimistic scenario then anticipating negative 0.5 percent growth.

General Motors—once the largest and most profitable corporation in the world—will file for bankruptcy protection this morning. The bankruptcy of what was long the iconic symbol of the power of American industry signifies the failure of not only one company, but of American capitalism as a whole.
India has been accused of complicity in the deaths of 20,000 civilians in the final stages of Sri Lanka's war against the Tamil Tigers. Human rights groups have claimed India did not do enough to protect civilians in the war zone and a former commander on Indian peacekeeping forces in Sri Lanka has said India's role in the conflict was "distressing and disturbing".

The Sotomayor nomination has given radical conservatives new life. They have launched an attack that is nominally aimed at Judge Sotomayor. But it is really a coordinated stealth attack -- on President Obama's central vision, on progressive thought itself, and on Republicans who might stray from the conservative hard line.

In what future historians will mark as the exact date that the once great Nation of The United States was finally destroyed, June 1, 2009 will be the one penciled in due to the two most horrific events to have ever had occurred in their 223 year history, the bankruptcy and government acquirement of the once mighty General Motors Corporation, and America sealing its borders against the rest of the World.

WE'VE HEARD this story before. A group of men, disaffected, with petty criminal records and/or mental health issues, in need of money and harboring a real or imagined grudge, are approached by an FBI informant. Later, they're arrested for plotting a major "terrorist attack" on U.S. soil. Politicians and prosecutors praise the diligent work of the FBI in standing between us and another attack like the one on 9/11.

New Labour leaders can't blame thieving aristocrats when they're the ones who deny that class exists anymore. IF KIM Jong-Il has an imaginative public relations office, he'll issue a statement that setting off another nuclear weapon was due to a simple mistake as he was confused about which missile he'd registered as his second one, and it was all within the rules, but he's sorry if anyone's upset and it goes to show this ghastly system needs to be jolly well reformed.

American human rights activists might legally challenge the US military’s use of Predator drones in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The spy planes are virtually invisible when flying overhead. “That’s the spooky thing about the Predator,” terrorism expert Neil Livingstone says. Human rights activists point out that there’s no warning to innocent civilians in the targeted area.

AN ICON of American industrial might will today suffer a once unimaginable humiliation as General Motors – for generations the world's largest car company – files for bankruptcy. The company that created the Cadillacs and Chevys that were the very symbol of the American Dream will take bankruptcy protection as the only way to stave off collapse.

A verdict by a provincial court is poised to deepen the sense of injustice felt by Thailand’s Malay-Muslim minority in the country’s southern provinces, where an insurgency has been raging for over five years. The Songkhla provincial court ruled on Friday that military officers involved in the deaths of 78 Malay-Muslim boys and men in army custody in October 2004 did not commit a crime.

"The end of the Cold War, a generation ago, has brought neither global peace and disarmament nor the abolition of military alliances and blocs. On the contrary, the alleged victors, the United States and its allies around the world, have only intensified the consolidation of an international military network extending to all compass points, not only East and West but also North and South, the Far North and the Far South."
