The Canadian immigration service announced earlier in March that Galloway would not be allowed entry on national security grounds. Canada cited the support Galloway extended to the Gaza Strip -- which suffers from a 20-month blockade and recent Israeli military operations -- and grouped the anti-war advocate among people who "support or engage in terrorism". Calling the ban "idiotic", Galloway vowed to use all means at his disposal to overturn the ruling. "The outrageous decision is not something I'm prepared to accept," Galloway said in mid March. The US defence secretary, Robert Gates, said America had no intention of shooting down the missile itself, which satellite photographs show is sitting on a launch-pad in Musudan-ri. Pyongyang says the launch is intended to put a satellite into orbit, but any such ballistic missile testing or development is banned by a 2006 United Nations resolution. Major-General Andy Salmon, Britain's senior commander in Iraq, is slated to surrender the army's main base to the US command on May 31, the official end-of-combat date. Salmon, who is slated to return to the UK with most of Britain's 4000 troops, said Tuesday that the British military has scored major achievements in Iraq and will leave the country with their "heads held high". Israel has staged new air attacks on the Gaza Strip, inflicting more casualties on the blockaded territory, medical workers have confirmed. The air attacks came after exchanges of fire between Israeli troops and Palestinian fighters near the Kissufim border crossing to the east of Maghazi. Two other Palestinians had been wounded in the conflict. Gaza residents said the Israeli forces rolled 200 meters into the Palestinian-controlled territory.

Efforts to legally force teachers to pretend biologists seriously entertain alternative theories to evolution failed. Although you can't find any dissent in peer-reviewed journals or among legitimate scientists regarding Darwin's theory, evangelicals wanted to require teachers to point out "weaknesses" evolutionary scientists find scientifically flawed at best and out-and-out dishonest at worst.

A "high-ranking" member of al-Qaida was seized during a recent US mission in Afghanistan which left five people dead. But the Americans were set up: The tip-off as to his location came from a drug clan who wanted to get rid of a rival. The raid took place on March 21 in Kunduz province, where German forces are helping with security and reconstruction. A US liaison officer asked the German reconstruction team to keep the Kunduz airport clear but said nothing about the impending mission. Around half an hour later, a Hercules transport aircraft landed at the airfield, together with a whole fleet of combat and transport helicopters, which then took off for the nearby town of Imam Sahib.

Israel's war on Gaza has left 100,000 homeless, they have nowhere to go. Arab states have pledged millions of dollars to reconstruct Gaza, but the money has not come through. The people of Gaza have had enough of empty promises, they remain deeply skeptical as to whether the Arab summit will offer them anything other than rhetorical support. I watched a report on Fallujah last week on Sky News by Lisa Holland for which she deserves our gratitude and a top television award. It featured a quietly spoken Iraqi neo-natal specialist, Dr Muntaha Hashim, who is finding that in that town, bombed and collectively punished by the allies, there has been a massive increase in the number of deformed babies. Dr Hashim sees children with two heads – one, a young girl with bountiful hair was curled up on a bed – and others limbless, or born without vital organs. The number has doubled since the days of Saddam. Some unidentified chemical weaponry is responsible. Pro-war politicians, dodgy spooks, spin doctors and unrepentant media warriors such as Christopher Hitchens still claim triumphantly the war was a victory of good over evil.
