As the collapse of the housing market accelerates, new details of Obama’s housing rescue show that its central aim is to prop up the banks. Meanwhile, House Democrats have gutted legislation that would have given bankruptcy judges new leeway to rewrite mortgage contracts.

Just so you have a short list of what's at stake if Washington DC doesn't change policy here and now (which means before the collapse in equities comes, which could start as soon as today, if the indicators I watch have any validity at all. For what its worth, those indicators are painting a picture of the Apocalypse that I simply can't believe, and they're showing it as an imminent event - like perhaps today imminent.)

General Motors today warned it would go bust within 30 days unless the US treasury gives it a further multi-billion dollar loan. The dramatic warning from America's biggest car group came after its auditor, Deloitte, raised substantial doubts about its ability to continue operations as a going concern.

Thirty-four more families received notifications to evacuate their homes in southern Silwan. The Al Abasiya area to the south of Al Aqsa Mosque was raided by dozens of Israeli soldiers, police and municipal workers. According to the notices, demolition is slated to take place within 10 days.

In these days of economic crisis, budget overruns, earmarks, and multi-billion dollar bailouts, when Americans are being forced to tighten their own belts, one of the most automatic earmarks—a bailout by any measure—goes to a foreign government but is little understood by most Americans. U.S. military aid to Israel is doled out in annual increments of billions of dollars but remains virtually unchallenged while other fiscal outlays are drastically cut.
Some 40 mortgage brokers and real-estate agents are gathered at the Long Beach Hyatt on a balmy Friday in January to attend a seminar conducted by broker Allen Brodetsky and local real-estate attorney Steve Vondran. The mortgage business might have collapsed, but those assembled in the glittering ballroom have each paid $195 so Vondran and Brodetsky can teach them a fresh way to make money off of other people's debt.

President Obama is set to convene a summit on reforming healthcare Thursday, and some Republicans are already taking shots. Rep. Zach Wamp (Rep-Tenn) told MSNBC's Tamron Hall that Obama's proposed healthcare plans would be a "fast march to socialism", and that he believes that healthcare is not a right because many choose not to have insurance. What a shit for brains republican this Zach Wamp is! And I suppose Canada England and France are all socialist countries because they have health care.

The Federal Reserve Board of Governors receives daily reports on bailout loans to financial institutions and won’t make the information public, the central bank said in a reply to a Bloomberg News lawsuit. The Fed refused yesterday to disclose the names of the borrowers and the loans, alleging that it would cast “a stigma” on recipients of more than $1.9 trillion of emergency credit from U.S. taxpayers and the assets the central bank is accepting as collateral.

ABC's new reality show "Homeland Security U.S.A." THE PAST eight years are a testament to the bankruptcy of the "war on terror" and the government's use of fear, paranoia and xenophobia to accomplish U.S. imperial aims abroad and a crackdown of civil rights at home.

The Republican Party is hoping its screeds against "big government" will catch fire as patience with Obama's attempts to fix the crisis runs out. But that strategy may not work out the way the GOP hopes. PERHAPS ALL we need to know about modern conservatism and its party, the Republicans, was captured in Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal's nationally televised response to President Barack Obama's February 24 address to a joint session of Congress.
I was watching NBC's "Nightly News" last evening and just about fell out of my chair when the program touted the giant Kaiser-Permanente as the future of health care we could be living with under the Obama health care reforms, whatever those are supposed to be. While Kaiser does pay doctors salaries and keep costs down compared to some medical systems, NBS acted as if Kaiser's quality of care is the best thing ever.

Adding insult to outrage, former executives of the nefarious Countrywide Financial, who should be involved in a RICO suit for conspiracy to defraud based on thousands of knowingly risky loans they made to tens of thousands of Americans, are now poising themselves to make more millions from the home mortgage mess they helped create, reports the New York Times.

The US economy is swaying, teetering heavily under the increased debt burden imposed by the Iraq War and now the looming banking crisis. President Obama’s proposal to remediate the crisis situation by introducing more debt into the system is now law. The only problem is that, under the present circumstances, President Obama’s therapeutic regimen represents, with a very high probability, the very medicine that will strike a mortal blow to the patient--in this case the US economy.

On Capitol Hill, debate has begun over forming a truth commission to shed light on the Bush administration’s secret polices on detention, interrogation and domestic spying. A hearing on the issue was held Wednesday, two days after the Obama administration released a series of once-secret Bush administration Justice Department memos that authorized President Bush to deploy the military to carry out raids inside the United States. We speak to human rights attorney Michael Ratner of the Center for Constitutional Rights.

12 year old boy in Beaverton, Oregon recently developed a new type of 3D solar cell that makes other solar cells look inefficient by comparison. William Yuan's 3D cell can absorb both visible and UV light. According to his calculations, solar panels equipped with his 3D cells could provide 500 times more light absorption than current commercial solar cells and nine times more light than existing 3D solar cells.
